I believe that most of them are, but there have been other leathers used. I've seen ads for calf and Russian reindeer, pigskin has been suggested, and kangaroo is used in some modern hats (not sure about vintage).

Hey guys, there's a Mallory Ten in an antique mall on U.S. 422 1251 east main st. Anneville PA. It's in an Adams hat box on a high shelf in the last isle. There are a couple of other hats in hat boxes but all were stingy brimmed . Either way, about five or six old hats in this shop for someone looking to add to their collection. Oh, It's a homburg, grey with black ribbon and brown sweatband in excellent condition. I passed on it because I knew I'd never wear it. Size 7 if I remember correctly.

You said in the new hats thread it was a lightweight model any other info on it?

It's a very lightweight Mallory - it says "cravenetted", it doesn't have a liner (has the store information on the inside of the crown) and I'm told it's identical to a vitafelt. The felt is very similar to my stetson playboy.

Brown Mid-30s

Just received this nice mid-30s brown Mallory. Based on the union tag this is post-1934. So I've now seen the "tombstone" logo from 1929-1935ish. This hat is surprisingly lightweight and the felt is very nice. You can crease the crown and then just wipe it away and recrease. I really like the piping around the liner tip.

Hi guys-- I apologize if this has been answered, but I couldn't find anything. I have the same question that Kangfish asked in October of 2009-- anyone know what "Torino Quality" is in a Mallory hat? Could it be a wool?

After receiving my Mallory "Torino Quality" derby last week, I 'm convinced that it's definitely a quality fur felt. In fact the finish is very smooth and wonderful. It has a good deal of stiffness as well, though certainly not helmet-like some older, more traditional protective derbies.
