sounds about right ... I say rust because that was the color

you know when something rusts and it rains and that rusty water drips on something ... the color that lands on your jacket or whatever ... that's what it looked like

it probably was this foxxing ... came off with the very top layer of dust from the nap

It might have been foxxing. Rust color is a good description. My hat was covered with it. I thought for sure it wouldn't come out. Felt is a pretty resilient material!

it definitely is ... if something doesn't get too deep into the felt we can sand it off like a piece of wood with no visible damage from doing so

what a wonderful fibrous material

It's some real nice quality felt for sure , Fed. I've never been disappointed with the felt Mallory used on these "tens"
