Well, I've searched high and low for the words to these songs, and the result has been the same - zip. So, I was wondering if anyone around here knew the words to The Woman In The Shoe (can't make 'em out from the recording) and Die Ganze Welt Ist Himmelblau. I've always wanted to learn a song in german, and this one sounds juuuust right.

I thank ye.

For the german one, I understand David Hasselhoff might be able to help. :D :p

Hello Charlie,

Here it is:

So blau, so blau, so blau

"The Woman In The Shoe" was introduced in the 1930 MGM musical picture Lord Byron of Broadway. You can actually watch that scene - in glorious technicolor - and hear the lyrics on You Tube. See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDNSUIr1uro

I am quite sure that I have a recording somewhere of Smith Ballew doing a vocal on the song - but I was unable to quickly find it. I have an instrumental version of the song on my website by Hotel Pennsylvania Music (which was, in reality, Jack Albin and His Orchestra) that I think is rather nice. http://dismuke.net/musicfiles/howmusic/thewomanintheshoe.ram Kind of reminds me of a very lush cartoon score.

(However, the reminder of Hotel Pennsylvania is making me sad. I am still very socked and distressed that such a wonderful old hotel is going to be razed for some crappy modern glass box.)

Also, that recording of "Die Ganze Welt Ist Himmelblau" on my website that you linked to belongs to a fellow Fedora Lounger who is an occasional contributor to my website and station. German popular music from that era was absolutely fantastic - and you can hear very definite influences from both peppy American jazz and beautiful, melodic Viennese operettas.

A great source of Golden Era music from Germany and the rest of Europe is an Internet radio station called Weimar Rundfunk which I highly recommend. Once you get past the flash intro page, simply click on the "Live 365" logo to listen.

Also, for fans of vintage German popular music, I highly recommend Max Raabe and his Palast Orchester - a 1920s and 1930s style dance band from Germany. They are simply outstanding - and very authentic. Vladimir Berkov and I were fortunate enough to see them perform in San Antonio a couple of years ago and to meet with the musicans afterwards at a party. For those who will be in California in mid March, the band will be peforming in San Francisco, Oakland and San Diego. The band's website is: http://www.palastorchester.de/index2.php If you have your screen resolution set just right, you will find a link at the top of the home page to see the site in English. You can see a YouTube video of the band performing in concert here Also on YouTube is a music video of a song that Raabe composed in honor of the World Cup coming to Germany last year - and everything about it, the clothes, the trains and the overall spirit is very much "Golden Era." To watch click here. Bottom line, if you are going to be in California or can afford to make a trip there in mid March, it will be very much worth your while to try and catch one of the band's performances.

That's pretty informative Dismuke!
Funny thing here about german music- I found the Weimar Rundfunk site a few weeks ago, and right there, among the playable tunes on their site was a song I'v been hunting for years - Regentropfen by Ludwig Rüth Orchester. First heard that one on a WWII documentary and I knew I had to have it.

(Oh, and another thing - Would you happen to have The Hut-Sut Song by the Merry Macs?)

Since Charlie's search has been answered, can anyone help me find the French lyrics to Django Reinhardt's "Nuages"?

Well, I happened to found the lyrics and a little something more:

I didn't know that tune had lyrics.

*bump*

Allow me to dust this one off for another obscure lyrical inquiry -
I was listening to the Fred Allen show, and I heard this utterly catchy number called In Chi-Chi Castenango. It seems to be a pretty rare number, as I've found it on only two CD releases, and the lyrics are nowhere to be seen. Anyone know 'em?

I found an excerpt on this site:

In Chichicastenango
They never dance the tango
But there’s a definite improvement
In the democratic movement
Which they teach you down in Chichicastenango

Dine
They have bread and wine
And they don’t divine
Words like yours and mine
That’s why they’re such good neighbors there

Excerpt from “Chichicastenango”
Lyrics by Xavier Cugat, music by Paco Perez 1937

Like what Buddy De Sylva has to say in this old song:

You're an old smoothie,
I'm an old softie,
I'm just like putty
In the hands of a girl like you.

Youre an old meanie,
I'm a big boobie,
I just go nutty,
In the hands of a girl like you.

Poor me, you played me for a sap;
Poor you, you thought you'd laid a trap!
Well dear, I think its time you knew,
You've done just what I wanted you to.

Silly old smoothie,
Crafty old softie,
I'll stick like putty
To the hand of a girl like you.
