The Island of Misfit Stetsons - factory rejects

Received 3 Stetsons today. They all seem to be from around the same date. 2 of them are marked as factory seconds/rejects. The 3rd hat has a Playboy sweatband and a Whippet liner...[huh] I've took pictures of 2 and then the batteries in my camera died. I'll add the 3rd tomorrow.

Royal De Luxe

The first is a nice light blue Royal De Luxe. It has a Dec 19th, 1951 Factory Store Reject stamp on the back of the sweat. Looks like they also picked away at the reorder tags. The hat looks pretty nice to me.

Whippet/Playboy

The 2nd hat is a stunning green color Whippet/Playboy. It has the Whippet liner and the looks of a Whippet with a Playboy sweatband. Its not marked/stamped as a 2nd or reject, but seems to fit with the group and they all came from the same person. It has the Chestnut St mark on the sweat and they overlayed the red/white reorder tag with a generic looking all white tag. Also picked away at the other tag.

If they were bigger, I'd offer to take those "rejects" off your hands.
Very nice. And very interesting, as always, to see reliable dates.

If they wanted those tags out, they would have been out. Or blacked out.
Those are insect bites.

how times have changed

these hats look nearly perfect; at least in these photos. Yet, Stetson inc decided to reject them. Funny isn't it that in today's market you find all sorts of hats from Christys and other manufacturers that suffer from far greater visible faults.

Who's to blame for that though, manufacturers not caring what they send out, or the consumer's corresponding lack of discernment, most people are more concerned with price than quality these days...it's a global mindset.

That green is fantastic. Now, Buler -- if you confirm that the binding on that hat is actually violet, as it appears to be, I am going to go stick my head in a pot of boiling water to shrink it so that I can wear that lid!!! Fantastic!


One thing that does interest me about this hat is the size tag. It shows the full "7 1/8" as opposed to simply "1/8". I have always wondered how far back Stetson started using size tags that included the full number. Looks like it might be earlier than I originally suspected. Is there a factory store stamp anywhere on that hat that dates it?

The 3rd Misfit

Here are pics of the 3rd Stetson. Its also a Royal De Luxe. Has a backbow. Stamped with "Stetson Employees Factory Store Reject". No date stamped anywhere. Also, it has a blemish in the felt near the front of the crown just above the ribbon. You can see it in the side shot, looks like a dark scar. So I can see why this didn't pass quality control. Although it did get a retailer stamp.

Jimmy, you can take your head out of the boiling water. The colors of that hat are really hard to photograph. The ribbon is kind of an olive/brown. The green felt is kind of hunter green with a brown tint. Its the first green hat that I've seen that I really wanted to wear.

I should learn to read. I wish it was the color it looks in the pic. But its actually hunter green. You can leave the water boiling though.... the hat is a little snug on me and I really want it to fit.

What? Do you mean to tell us that the binding is actually of the very same color as the felt?
To me it looks different from the hat body in all the photos you posted... [huh]
