The Ice Cream Man

Did old time ice cream trucks ring a bell when trolling the neighborhood for kids? The ice cream truck that drives by my house a couple of times a day sounds like a giant cell phone with very annoying "music" blasting. It makes me want to throw eggs, not buy ice cream. Bring back the bells!

The truck that trolled my neighborhood up until a couple years ago used bells -- since it was called "Cowbell's Ice Cream," this only made sense. However, the bells alternated with the most annoying Kiddie Favorites record ever made, and it always seemed to be stuck on "Nick Nack Paddy Wack" when it came by my house every afternoon.

Sadly, Cowbell's cruises no more, at least not in this neighborhood. All the little kids have gotten too old for such things, and evidently my steady purchases of Hoodsie cups and root beer popsicles were not enough to keep the bells-a-jingling...

It's probably a good idea to introduce the little tykes to the concept of "annoying song stuck in my head" at an early age.

The one that slowly travels our neighborhood through the summer plays "The Entertainer" over and over and over...
The truck is always driven by a guy I really don't feel comfortable having my children near. And he obviously hates people; children merit a special scorn.

Good heavens!!!

Come to think of it, our truck plays that same tune!
Ruthlessly, relentlessly,...mercilessly,...:eusa_doh:

No wonder the guy that drives it hates life,

What with the profusion of ringtones and other such computer generated tunes, you would think they could mix it up a little. Play a different tune once in a while.

In my brother's neighborhood, well, condominium complex, there is an older gentleman who the children call Mr. Johnny, he and his wife sell homemade ice cream, iced tea, lemonade and popcicles, etc. he rings a bell. The ice cream truck that come through my neighborhood plays a song, I don't know the name of it, but it's the same song that played when I was a kid, not quite bells, though it is bell like, if that makes any sense at all. What annoys me about that guy though is, he sometimes rolls through my street as late as 11 or 12 at night! I always wonder if he's selling more than ice cream. [huh]

We've got the same thing in our neighborhood as well...'the entertainer' playing over and over again, I haven't once let my kids buy ice cream from the guy...when it gets warm out we usually are pretty well stocked up on ice cream and popscicles already. When I was a kid though the ice cream guy in our neighborhood loved kids, he was a bit of a grandpa type and all the kids loved him right back

"Greensleeves" or "Red River Rock."

They were the popular tunes when I was a kid growing up in the late 70's and 80's. The other day, my wife and I heard an ice cream van that must have been playing a music tape that had been worn near to death; the poor old rendition of "Greensleeves" was morphing in and out of tune, giving me a mental image of an old vinyl record warped by being left in the sun too long!

I heard a funny story from a friend once, who told me his folks used to tell him and his sister that the ice cream man only played the music when he'd run out of ice cream! Poor kids!

The last few years we've have the Home Ice Cream truck come around once a week. He rings a bell and is very popular.

We had Mister Softee growing up, and he played that old music box music! It was so cool!

In Jersey, we had Mr Softee too. Probably one of the rudest ice cream guys around. He would purposely not stop for a few houses and make kids chase him! The Good Humor guy was much nicer.

If you heard the song, you'd know exactly who was coming!
