Wowser's! I watched 10 minutes of that last night... by accident! I forgot it was on. Ms. Underwood did NOT do her career any favors with THAT one! I give you one of my favorite quotes...

"I'd rather stick needles in my eyes!"

Or in this case my ears. Whoever mixed the sound for that one should be driven out of down on an electric rail. Sheeeya!

Yep, she was basically a stiff in the acting department, as well. And the guy who played Von Trapp was as flat as a pancake. And a Black reverend mother in late 1930s Austria? Was this actually possible, or just more political correctness run amok?

The kids were cute, especially the little girls, who were adorable.

Like I mentioned in another thread, I did not enjoy it one bit less than the original. But that's never been real high on my list either, gives me flashbacks of having to learn to sing some of those songs in grade school.
I suffered through it because my wife wanted to watch it with the kids. They'd never seen the original, and I think they were fascinated that there were as many little Von Trapps as there are of them. Either way, sometimes you have to put your own self interests aside for the kids, they aren't little long.

I couldn't bring myself to watch it, having seen the film enough times, and a very creditable professional production back in the 70s. Not one of my fave R & H shows by any means. But it sure was fun reading the various and sundry snarky comments on Facebook! I suppose I'll have to catch a little of it when it comes on again, or is available on Youtube.

What maniac allowed another version of this tripe to be unleashed on the world? It's an evil, evil film. I say evil because all the protagonsts were so grating, it made me root for the Nazis.

As I said over on the TV show thread, it's FAR from my favorite R&H show - the book (which is atypically NOT by Hammerstein) is very clumsy, the pacing is a mess, some of the business with the children is insulin-shock inducing, and the songs are a very mixed bag. (And while my parents were regular Broadway theatergoers for decades and I memorized a bunch of their classic musical cast albums, this show's nuns and Nazis made it a harder sell to Jews like us, so it was one R&H cast album that we didn't own. Watching the film on TV was never a family tradition for us.)

But I applaud this production for doing the show LIVE in the tradition of the 1957 R&H Cinderella - and I think it's impressive that such a complex production came off without any problems. But Carrie Underwood can't act, Stephen Moyer was stiff, and with such a void at the center, much of the performance fell flat. Still, a few of the songs really got to me anyway. That's R&H for ya!

Yes, I watched it mainly because it was live-live. You don't see that anymore. Doing a complicated dramatic program like this live-live gives it an immediacy that is not there with taped-as-live. There were mistakes that would've been reshot and edited if this was done taped-as-live: the fiance's black gown got stepped on as she entered the main foyer (she recovered nicely); a blurry white post entered a shot of Von Trapp as he moved left in the frame; faces were lost in various over the shoulder shots; Von Trapp's voice was lost as he began speaking before he entered the main hallway. He was either between mics or one wasn't turned on in time.

All minor mistakes, but they all added to the charm of a live-live broadcast, afaic.

I think the mere fact that this was a LIVE broadcast pretty much trumps any criticism. It has been so long since anything like this has been done that I was totally impressed that they even did it.
A big deal tv production like this is something I remember from my own childhood, often the whole family would gather to watch. I'm thankful my kids had the chance to experience that, commercials and all. I don't know how many times they asked "can't we just fast forward through them?"

Childhood memories of the original haunt me... so I was kind of thinking as great of a singer as Carrie is that she could hardly do worse...
