I attempted the headband set last night, but I was not pleased with the results at all. Well, that's not entirely true. I was pleased with it until I brushed it out. I have done rollers tons of times and have always managed to go from the frizzy brush out to smooth waves/curls, but with this...it was one big frizz ball. Perhaps I need longer hair? Mine isn't even quite shoulder length.

Before you brushed out the curls, were they smaller in size than your usual sets? I ask because it seems like smaller curls after unrolling = more frizz for a lot of people, myself included.

They were longer, I think. When I do a set with curlers, I have at least two rows in the back because even though my hair isn't very long, there's a lot of it! When I did the hairband thing, it left me with (almost) ringlets. maybe if I use bigger sections of hair? I'll give it a try and see what happens!

I get ringlet-like curls if I roll very tightly with the hair band method too, and that's not all that far from my natural curl so it makes for tough no-frizz styling because of that (I suspect). For harder-to-curl hair, it seems to work very well though. I've thought several times I'd be happier with the hair band method of curling if only I could find a fat hair band - something about 1-1.5" in diameter to wrap my hair around. Foam, even. Like one giant foam roller that stretches so I could wrap the hair over and over around it and then let it dry into larger curls for easier brushing. Maybe something exists but I haven't run across it. I tried using a big scarf wound up but it still wasn't a big enough diameter to make any difference.

Normally my hair is super flat! I haven't had a chance to try the headband again. Maybe you could try two (or three) headbands together? Or maybe they would bunch up?

This girl uses really large, fat foam rollers. Maybe those would match your needs? :)
I've been curious about them for a while myself!

Thanks, katiesparkles. I watch her tutorials all the time and she posted her source for them not that long ago. It's on my list of things to buy when I get around to it.

It seems very useful and interesting tips about hair care. I have tried many costly hair care products as well as home remedies to make my hair stronger and shiner but most of them are ineffective. Thanks for sharing this information in this threads.

Hello to all of you! It's been a while since I last posted here in The Fedora Lounge.

Does anyone have a good tutorial (pictures or videos) about different ways for setting hair with pin curls? It seems that everytime I try to make pin curls my hair gets messy...!

Thank you in advance :)

Sorry for resurrecting the second thread of the day! I have a lot to catch up on, it seems!

I really like the look of the middy haircut - I was wondering if this was a popular style in the UK during the 1940s, or was it an exclusively American trend?

Hello, everyone!

I would like to ask for your expertise on a hairstyle. I have seen several photos of women wearing this hairstyle or one similar, but I haven't seen one that shows the back of the hair. I was wondering if anyone was familiar with how this particular hairstyle is achieved, and if the hair needs to be short to do so...mine is thick and straight and chin length, pretty even all the way around, but I am more than willing to cut it if need be.

Thanks so much!

Have any longer-haired ladies used the By Gum By Golly sponge roller tutorial with success? This one: http://blog.bygumbygolly.com/2011/09/how-i-do-late-30searly-40s-sponge.html

I have my hair sitting in it right now. My hair is getting close to waist, probably a few inches above. I was wondering if anyone's had success with longer hair using this? It looks so lovely in shorter hair.

My hair is maybe 3 inches longer than hers but much thicker. When I use sponge rollers (the pink ones)---which is my typical go to since it's easiest for me and lasts the longest--I have to brush out a lot more than she seems to in her tutorial, or else I look like an escaped patient from a 1980's asylum. I've been experimenting with the placement of the rollers, my max roll up to point would be the height of her second row, and it has helped de-poodle my 'do quite a bit.

Would you post your results even if less-than-perfect? I'm always curious how different styling techniques work on other people.

Oh sorry doll, I've already done my best to get a lot of the curl OUT -- I used green rollers and small sections of hair. Big mistake! I should've used pink ones and larger sections of hair to get the size curls she comes out with in those photos. My hair is quite thin and curls up really tight, so my curls were sooooo tiny. It didn't brush out well at all! I think larger rollers might fare better so I am keen to try again. Next time I'll remember to photo for you.

I wish I could bear to cut my hair but I tried it and I just can't do it again!
