The "Great Race" 2018 (Pic Heavy)

"The Great Race" (look it up) an annual event where vintage cars are driven cross country in time trials. The governing body of this organization consider anything 1974 and below as "Vintage". They have three divisions that I could discern:

"Rookie"
"Sportsman"
"Professional"

There's a 50 grand prize for the winner. It's consistency not speed that's the key. As in anything some are "in it to win it" while others are just along for ride. Everything was going swimmingly till the clouds opened up. No rain in weeks but you know... plan a big event and here it comes. Here's some of my faves. I'm not expert I'm sure I'll get some of the cars or years wrong feel free to correct me!

"Buffalo to Nova Scotia or BUST"! Well what's a little rain between friends.

Nice "hot rod" Volvo.

The ever ubiquitous '57 Chevy.

'55 Studebaker (my fave marque) "Power Hawk" I believe.

One of three extremely rare "Peerless" cars in the race... all over 100 years old.

Ford Indy Car from back in the day..

For you truck fans out there.

I think that's enough for now.. they started out with 120 entrants I believe... now down to 116. If you like it lemme know I've more photo's...

A '38 Ford, methinks. Nice! I don't know spit about vintage cars, but I can look at 'em all day long so you can post as many photos as you like as far as I'm concerned. But this isn't my private forum, so...

My dad did time trials of this nature in an Austin 7 special many years ago. By his account, they were a lot trickier than mere 'who is the fastest' affairs.

Welp... due to whelming demand.... here's some more. The "Blue Oval" was king in this years doings. Tons of Fords... Chevy was kinda distant second. My photographer was a close friend of mine who took these on her phone as my camera was collecting dust in the living room. God I'm an idiot sometimes! Shout out to Ms. Joan Hemming (no relation to the Race sponsor "Hemming's Motor News but I wish to God she was) for her help and patience!

One of those wicked little Sunbeam Tigers with the honking big Ford engine in a little bitty car! Stop light sleeper and trust me that hood scoop was needed.

Not sure of this one but man what a beaut!

Astin Martin DB6 (not 5) but close enough for Government work. "Happy to see you again Mr. Bond!"

For you "Sons of the 70's" here's your holy grail a bad assed Chevy Monte Carlo... probably complete with 8 track tape and match books to make it work!

Now THAT'S a convertible. Identification someone please?

Another Studebaker... A '53 or 4 President Speedster Coupe! Raymond Lowey was a god amongst men!

Nice street rod with a loud flat head mill.

Another for the Son's of the 70's... a sweet GOAT convertible!

Lovely motor, the A. Fun fact: of 101,081 built, only 5869 were sold on the domestic market, the lowest of any British car on record. No idea how many FHCs were made as opposed to the convertibles, but they certainly seem rare nowadays. I think of all the MGAs I've ever seen in person, I've only seen one fhc. (Though it's also possible that a number of convertibles around now are chopped coupes. This was a popular conversion with two door Morris Minors about twenty years ago.)

My gut instinct is this is a 70s era kit of some sort. Pretty cool looking.

Here (U.S.), the base car was known as the Alpine, but with the V8 as the Tiger, and was developed, in part, by Carroll Shelby.

You're right - it was the Alpine in the UK too, my misremembering - the Talbot was a different car altogether (broadly prewar styling into the late 50s).

I believe that was called the 122 here.

Yes, it had a few different model numbers over time if memory serves, but 122 was the first.

That's a '67 GTO. My second favorite year for that car (first fave was '66).

The one thing I didn't like about the '66-'67 GTO was the way they designers "inset" the rear window. It looked great, but friends who owned them all complained about water pooling at the base of the window whenever they washed their cars or when it rained, causing issues with the paint and, eventually, rust.
