The first one is so Liza Minnelli in Cabaret (again 70s does 20s). The second one...well, I just wonder why Leo Di Caprio needs to be fake tanned to George Hamilton levels.

Indeed!!! Granted, the text does mention Nick Carraway noticing Gatsby's tanned skin. STILL, I'm hoping this heavy-handed tint relates to the 3D technology? Otherwise, not putting any money on the idea of this flick being in the Best Costume category at the Oscars when it comes out! ;p

So, today I got an email from Garnet Hill (basically a bed linens, clothing and home decor company) about their new "Gone Gatsby" collection to promote the new movie and the style of the 1920s: http://www.garnethill.com/bedding-home/seasonal-highlights/trend-gone-gatsby/. I thought people here might get a laugh out of it. Or cry. Or something.

Why are there all those whales? Have I forgotten something major from the book or something? [huh]

Was Long Island somewhere the whalers passed through, or was that all somewhere else? I like the whale rugs, they put me in mind of Moby Dick.

I believe there was whaling in that area, but I don't think that was as major as in New England. Moby Dick was written at the height of whaling when it was an adventure- 1851. I think the last US whaling ship went out sometime in the 1920s, but it had been on the decline (significantly) since before 1900.

I'm not criticizing the whales and the beach-y theme, but I can't figure out what they have to do with The Great Gatsby, or at least my reading of it. I never got a "beachy" feel from the Great Gatsby- I always thought the book focused more of the elegance and decadence of Gatsby (like the books in his magnificent library without the pages cut). I hope that they don't make his elegant mansion look like a beach house in the movie. Or perhaps this is bad branding gone astray.

OK... the way I see it is that some well named actors are making a period film to the best of their ability. I think that if nothing else this should be appreciated so that other period films may be inspired.

Will period films have everything perfect??? Are you kidding me... I mean seriously, unless you personally are trying to accomplish just such an artistic and especially financial endeavor, I would just hope for the best and wish them all the luck in the world.

I mean who knows... maybe this could be a great adaptation? I was actually just watching The Aviator and was thinking that Leo should have been older.. But I remember that this was the first of his movies that kind of made me forget who he was. The next was Shutter Island.

Enjoy it for what it is.

Just watched the trailer and even though my expectations were low to begin with I was disappointed. All the subtlety of a jack-hammer. Another great story botched (again).

Um, well...struggling to say something positive from that trailer... um Elizabeth Debicki looks good in 1920s style in contrast to that silly outfit they have for Isla Fisher.

I am never one to criticise a film trailer having modern music, such as the Gangster Squad, but the song at the start of the Gatsby trailer really threw me off... maybe because I've heard the song used so many times in so many things? I do not know.

It's a mass appeal thing. Gotta draw them in so people can relate to people 90 years ago. Period pieces have to have all the bells and whistles these days (3D, modern music, etc) or they won't make any money. And it's ALL about money.

I just watched the trailer on YouTube and the music definitely elicited much commentary -- here's a sampling:

"If this music represents the tone of the movie... well, let's just say it's an enormous fail!"

"Yeah that dull, awful rap from the 2010s beginning does NOT represent the tone and atmosphere from the 1920s..."

"Whoever chose the music for the trailer should be fired"

"So it's 3D, and the trailer music was way ****** off from what it should have been. Do not disappoint me dammit."

"The music ruins it for me, has too much of a Moulin Rouge feel to it."

"What the **** is with the rap soundtrack!? Seriously?"

"This is the set in the 1920s, not the ****** 2010s. ******* Warner Brothers did the same stupid **** with the Gangster Squad trailer. ...learn the ******* setting idiots."

"What is with the music selection of this trailer? It starts out with autotune and then moves into some contemporary silliness. I'm not saying that music is bad, but the Great Gatsby should be very nostalgic of the time period it represents. I hope this is a fluke."

"laz burman's greasy backwards-hipster virgin fingerprints are definately all over this one"

"if the soundtrack of this trailer reflects the soundtrack of the movie.. heads will roll"
