One Too Many
Being from Portland, I've developed quite a taste for microbrews over the past couple years. Stumptown itself is blessed with no fewer than 28 breweries, and I can think of at least three others in the state of Oregon alone. It's great.

Perennial (and year-round) favourites include Widmer Brothers' Hefewizen and Drop Top amber; Rogue Dead Guy ale; and Deschutes Obsidian stout, Black Butte porter and Mirror Pond pale ale.
Seasonally, I adore Widmer's Winter '07 ale (sadly, no longer available) and Snow Plow stout, and Deschutes' Jubelale and Cinder Cone red.

Honourable mention goes to New Belgium brewery for another faithful standby: Fat Tire. Skinny Dip is pretty good, too.

For someone that used to hate beer with a passion... I sure do drink a lot of it!

I had a dandy new beer last night, Black Wattle Superior Wattle Seed Ale from Barons Brewing of Sydney, Australia. What, you may ask, is wattle seed? Well, wattle "is a native Australian tree found in abundance around Australia," and wattle seed is now used as "an innovative flavoring agent."

When I bought the beer, I hoped that it would introduce me to a new and interesting flavor; but that the flavor would be subtly employed, not in a gimmicky or overpowering way. And guess what? I got exactly what I hoped for! The only problem is, the wattle seed flavor is so new to me that I don't know quite how to describe it (and I'm not one of those people who has great aptitude for the precise description of flavors in beer or wine to begin with). I'll just have to say that the wattle seed adds a lovely "je ne sais quoi" to a beer that would probably be smashing even without it. So if you see this beer on your local liquor shelves, by all means grab it.

The Ales: Spitfire, Bishops Finger and London Pride.
Lager/pilsner: Staropramen (czech) Urquelle and Carlsberg.
Stout: Nothing beats a Guinness - allthough a small local brewery in Svaneke makes a great Stout too.

Up until a couple of years ago, pilsner was the only thing you could get in Norway. Good, but not to exiting. But lately, the pub's newfound interest in interesting beer has given us more choises.

I like Old Speckled Hen and Spitfire, and that's easy to find. And Guiness. More expensive and more difficoult to get are the Trappist Beers, but that's one of my favourits. "N??gne ?ò" also has many good beers!

And yesterday I had something called "Twisted and bitter" or something, a scottish beer. Citrusy, bitter and light, really refreshing and maybe a new favourite for me!

And Smithy, since you are in Trondheim and has developed a taste for the local beer: There is a local micro brewery called Trondhjem Mikrobryggeri that you might like to check out. They have a bar in Prinsens Gate 39 I think. I have heard a lot of good things about their beer, allthough it varies with the seasons or something.

At the "EPCOT Food and Wine Festival" there has been a Sam Adams booth yearly for several years now. They have the most popular brews, as well as many unusual ones, on tap.
The big suprise? Cherry Wheat ... unexpectedly delicious and very popular!

Many thanks Helen, I actually think I may have been to that pub on a bit of a pub crawl with some ex-pats not long after arriving here, but it's all a bit fuzzy. We're off for a drink tonight so may very well have to wander up there for an ale.

Was that Scottish beer you mentioned, "Twisted Thistle"? Certainly fits your description, very refreshing IPA.



EDIT: Nearly forgot to mention I tried (actually truth be told, overindulged in) a very nice, and new to me, Norwegian dark lager Mack Mørkertidsøl (means "the dark time beer) which was rather tasty. I've drunk Mack stuff before but liked this a lot more, and considering it was still Polar Night time where we were for Christmas, very appropriate!

I'm not completely sure, but I thought it was "bitter and twisted." But that could be the name of the beer, the brand could be something else. The bottle had a mouse on it, and a cute little story about the brewery's mouse becoming a mascot. (Eeek, how un-hygenic!)

Good luck with the micro brewery, let me know what you think! I've never been there myself, but it comes heartly reccomended by many of my siblings!

Has any one tried Leffe Brune? It's a dark Belgian. Glorious gift from God!! Had it on tap in Montreal last September at a great restaurant called Bieres et Compagnie. Been looking for it ever since around home in RI to no avail. Delicious!!!

Speaking of nectar...I got acquainted with apricot-flavored beer night before last. Magic Hat #9 Not-Quite-Pale Ale. The flavor is apricot essence, not the actual fruit, so it's not oversweet or syrupy. Quite pleasant really, medium bodied and colored.

I'm going to make you jealous here alphy but a lot of the pubs back in my home (and BT's for that matter) in Auckland, NZ carry Leffe beers. My old local carried both Brune and Blond in bottles but there were a number of Belgian bars and some normal pubs which had it on tap. Actually anyone in Auckland who is hungry should visit The Occidental pub in Vulcan Lane (the "Poxy Oxy") and have a glass of Leffe and a plate of the Belgian bangers and mash. Good stuff and guaranteed to fill you up.

Just out of interest, why have all the booze threads been put in the Golden Era section? Any particular reason? It seems to me they were more Observation Bar material rather than being specifically concerned with a discussion about alcohol in the Golden Era (they all seemed to be "what's your favourite...".
