"The Good" / "The Man With No Name" Clint Eastwood Hat

I was searching around for affordable fur felt hats, mostly in the same price range I might expect from the Australian company Akubra. I then stumbled upon this hat, which is available on ebay and Amazon:

The color appears to be a different sort of brown, darker with more grey undertones, but it is something I can accept. To me, it looks like a decent, affordably priced Clint Eastwood "The Man With No Name" type of replica hat. It is supposed to be made of rabbit fur (fur felt), as well, which puts it above a standard costume grade hat. Does anybody have experience with this vendor at all, on here? If I like the way the hat looks, do you recommend that I buy it? Could I expect a decent quality out of this, as in wearable for rainy weather and hours out in the fields, without it shrinking so much?

One important question I have is what do you suppose the brim width of this hat is? I think it looks to be around 3 1/2 inches in width, does that seem correct?

With my forum namesake, I think it's close to the time I get around to buying a hat that resembles the one worn by "The Good" in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

Yeah, I've been thinking about those black hats, but this hat was something I had in mind for several years, as well. I'd probably look better with Eastwood's more moderate brim hat than Lee Van Cleef's or Henry Fonda's style of wide brim gaucho hat, as an example, although the latter type's also something to think about. If this is anything like Stetson's current 4x quality of fur felt, compared to Akubra's (better able to handle the outdoors' wear and tear), then I think I'll be happy enough.

One Akubra style I had been thinking about was the Akubra Cowboy, which is vaguely like the Eastwood hat, but not a near screen-accurate hat like this one looks.

I might also like a black one, if they still have one.

The Akubra Snowy River is a nice hat (I have a fawn one, also with a Clint Eastwood replica leather band, like the one sold in the ebay and Amazon links, probably same vendor. It looks similar to the hat worn by Charles Bronson in Once Upon a Time in the West), but the side curls have been stubborn on mine to flatten. On that one hat, I just keep the curled brim as the style.

Honestly if you want a hat like that you have two choices. Buy a custom made hat or buy a hat the right colour and send it to a custom hatter to be reworked to what you want. Look on the bay and Kijiji or whatever the local buy and sell group is. See if you can find any cowboy hat second hand the right colour size and brim width. Probably 3 ½”. Shouldn’t be too hard to find. Also shouldn’t be too expensive.
If you are hooked on Akubra I would buy a Bobby in Tanbark brown or Rough Rider in logen. Wear it, play with it and see if you can get it looking how you want it. If you can great, if not then send it to a hatter that can make it look how you want.

To me, judging by the photo alone, it doesn't look bad (especially if it really is 100% rabbit fur). The hatband looks very close too. Color will never be exact. I'll bet Clint's was bleached some to look old. What I question is why the price is that low? A hatband like that alone of real leather would be at least $50+. I wouldn't do one for that price. Can you return it if not happy?

The major thing that gave the 'stranger's' hat it's iconic status is the asymmetric brim, without it it's just another plain brown cowboy hat, which unfortunatly, most copies of this hat seem to be.

The hat that was originally posted appears to be the Straightline Collectibles replica. I suspect they're made overseas and have had different runs made of different degrees of quality.

I don't think anyone knows what the true dimensions were on the original. But most hat makers make reporoductions with a 4 1/4" - 4 1/2" Crown and 3 1/4 - 3 3/4" Brim.

Apologies if my post seemed grumpy. That was certainly not my intent, sir. Ironically I did exactly the same thing just yesterday, not noticing and responded to an even older post! I only wanted to alert you so you wouldn’t be offended if there was no response from the OP. Instead, you were offended, and again, that was not my intent.

I have an old Stetson, cicra about 1975 that was made to look a lot like that. Hatband was vinyl, tooled to look like the leather. I long since gave up the ghost though. I wore it for a few years then did not care for it and gave it to my dad. Actually when I bought it, I simply saw it first and wanted it, he also wanted it but settled for a different model. After I gave it to him he wore it for quite a few years, don't remember exactly how long, until he died. In the meantime he found and got the same model in black. By the time I got them back, they were getting kind of dirty, and those vinyl hatbands looking shabby, so I had the hats reworked, resized for 7 1/8 long oval to 7/14 to fit me better, guess I got a swelled head over the years, and had the vinyl hatbands replaced with color appropriate ribbon,
