I cannot believe that there have not been any good news since 01DEC11 amoungst the Loungers. I for one had a job interview last Monday that I think went rather well. Looks like I may have a new job at the end of FEB12.

That is great news. Also AmateisGal that is wonderful about your article getting published.

I have just got a job! It's not teaching, alas, teaching jobs are as rare as rocking horse poo over here at the moment, with budget cuts and the raising of the retirement age. It's the manager of a charity shop!

Being in the charity sector, the pay is less than half of my old salary and the hours are longer, but I'm not really moaning - it's a job I'll be excellent at. I was in retail management for 10 years before I trained as a teacher and I spend most of my walking hours trolling though charity shops, so it combines my job with my hobby and I'll be raising lots of money for and excellent cause.

I agree, great news W-D. Jobs are scarce all over.
The last visit with my Dr (this past week) produced another idea for my condition, and so far it's decreased my pain level considerably. This allowed me to get the Christmas tree and some decorations out, which are a chore (since I have to dig for them!).

That's wonderful you got a job you'll love, W-D Forties! And best of luck to Gregg, both for less pain and for the all-important Christmas decorations!

My only good news of late has been getting a start on a very intimidating final paper. Once I get that and a few other details wrapped up, another college semester is done and the holidays can truly begin...

What a great place to come into for some cheerful and chirpy news. It's just great to hear 'good news' for a change and find out about the silver linings in people's fortunes, so thank you one and all.

Seems that any positive movment in jobs is considered Good News. How about social events such as births, weddings, retirements, new house/car/toys?
Indeed, I just had another call for a possible job today!
I am going to go see my new grandson for the first time this week, surely great news.

For the first time in nearly a year, I practiced playing harmonica again. I used to pack a "concealed musical weapon" every day, but... to make a long story short, a harmonica lived in my pocket and my cell phone on a belt clip for 4 years. That phone died, I got a new one too large for the belt. So, the harmonica was displaced from my pocket. Yesterday I get the idea to make a harmonica belt pouch. I finished one today, and start playing again!

I can hear the murmurs already...:D "Now not only does this "weird" guy wear a fedora, carry a pocketwatch, and dress sharply, but he randomly starts playing jazz standards wherever he wants!"

Congrats! I'll have to go by the Museum while I'm in Tacoma. When do you start actually posing?

Thanks! I will be doing the first Thursday night of the month (free admission so it is really busy) the rest of the schedule will be fluid. A Saturday and a week day here and there throughout the month.

Last year, my grandmother died at the age of 97. She left this world with her 1951 Singer 99k sewing-machine in the hands of her family...

In honour of her memory, I decided to try and restore this machine to health and functionality.

It took about a month of work, but it's done!

I had to clean EVERY SINGLE IOTA of this machine, from the top, down, in and out, topside and underside. That in itself took several days' work. I had to pick out 61-years-worth of dust, crud, thread, fluff and gunk using needle-nosed tweezers. And this was a long, challenging, fiddly process.

Then, I had to clean the machine and polish it (continuing to pick out crap using tweezers), then I had to learn how to work it and thread it (and still pick out more fluff). I tested the bobbin-winder (and cleared out more fluff), I bought spare needles for it (and cleared out MORE fluff), I researched it and read up on it (and cleaned out yet MORE fluff)...

Then I spent all of today oiling the machine using high-grade machine-oil.

This took a lot longer than I thought it would, but after several dozen generous squirts in all the right places, and a lot of coaxing, I have got the machine RUNNING AGAIN!!!!!

All it requires is a replacement slide-plate, and it's complete! I can get one online, so I'm gonna buy one as soon as I can.

A video of the running machine is currently being uploaded to YouTube. It shall be posted here when it is available.

If you haven't seen this yet, you will soon. Probably several times. It will become inescapable. But it's just such a nice story. Gives you faith in America and faith in humanity. And faith in little boys.
