There was also Mariya Oktyabryskaya

Born to a peasant family in the Crimea, Mariya was one of ten children. In 1925 she married a young army officer and in tribute to the October Revolution she and her husband changed their surname to Oktyabryskaya. Her husband was killed in the fighting around Kiev in 1941, but the news took a year to reach her. Her desire for revenge led her to sell all her possessions to raise funds to purchase a tank for the Red Army. Mariya placed one condition on this donation: she must be allowed to drive it! Realizing the publicity opportunities, Stavka (General Staff) approved her request and, at the age of thirty-eight, she commenced training.

In September 1943 she was assigned to the 26th Guards Tank Brigade as a mechanic/driver. When Mariya arrived at her unit in a T-34 tank emblazoned with the turret slogan "Fighting Girlfriend", the tankists viewed her with skepticism and considered the assignment a publicity stunt. This attitude changed to one of respect following Mariya's participation in battle. Mariya distinguished herself as a skilled and fearless driver, maneuvering her tank like a veteran and accounting for many enemy troops and guns in close assaults during her rampage of revenge. In several engagements enemy shells damaging the tracks halted her T-34. Mariya, often disregarding orders not to, would jump out of the tank under fire, effect repairs to get back into action as soon as possible.

In January 1944 she was hit in the head by shrapnel while repairing a broken track and killed. In August she was posthumously decorated becoming the first female tankist to be awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union -- the Red Army's highest award for military valor.

Gonorrhea has always been with us too. Doesn't mean we have to embrace it.

Meh. No one has ever died from SNL. Yet.

Just continue doing what you already do very well: turn your back on the puerility, and don't perpetuate it. Continue being an example to others. Be in the world, but not of it. And make sure that your vanilla ice cream comes from Breyer's or Thrifty ... they make the best!

Meh. No one has ever died from SNL. Yet.

Some critics have argued quite persuasively that SNL, over the past forty years, has killed intelligent comedy -- and left nothing but smarmy frat-boy irony in its place. If you want intelligent, clever media satire, Stoopnagle and Budd, Fred Allen, and Bob and Ray were doing the real stuff decades before this crowd was born. And without ever once referring to perspiring genitalia.

Breyers used to be the best vanilla, before Kraft bought them out and with their usual reverse-Midas touch, turned it into gummy dross.

First, I agree Breyer's is the best mass produced vanilla on the market.

Second, when did SNL ever say they were intelligent comedy? They've never been known for intelligent comedy. It's always been silly skits.

If you want intelligent media satire you can still find it, but it's not on SNL and never was.

Actually, that's exactly my point -- it never was. And that style of comedy came to dominate popular culture in a way it never had before, due quite largely to the influence of SNL and its various tentacles -- its graduates, their movies and such. The generation we have writing comedy today was weaned on that style of humor and can't relate to anything else -- the subtleties of, say, a Preston Sturges, are completely beyond their comprehension, let alone their skill.

Letterman used to be funny, in a Steve Allen minimalist kind of way, but even he has forgotten how to do it -- clearly his current writers are as witless as any of the rest of the modern pack. Jon Stewart is a better interviewer than he is a comedian. Steven Colbert is a good comic actor with one tired schtick -- O'Reilly himself is such a self-satire that anything Colbert does is redundant. South Park is like a monkey flinging poo in a zoo cage, with no discrimination at all between deserving and undeserving targets.
