The trailer just broke for Ruben Fleischer's film Gangster Squad, based upon the real life Hat Squad.

Here's the trailer:

I am truly happy with this! I love the casting, especially Sean Penn as Mickey Cohen, that's brilliant!
And what looks to be a nice supporting role from Nick "Mullholland Falls" Nolte, plus Giovanni Ribisi, Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, shucks folks these are heavy hitters! Oh and my future wife Emma Stone is there as well.

Is anyone else as excited for this as I am?

Hesitantly curious. Unfortunatley, it reminds me of the last time they tried to mix a Golden Age gangster film with a modern gangsta film, Hoodlum...

Perhaps with a little Mobsters mixed in?

I can't see the trailer here at work, but I am asuming that the hip-hop music is over the quickly cut scenes, as per the usual trailer these days. Maybe the case is similar to Boardwalk Empire, where the theme, a modern guitar piece, is only used right there and does not appear in the body of the show itself. Hopefully, Gangster Squad is only employing a similar tactic.

I don't mind modern music with the trailer, I see why they did it... for people who cannot associate gangsters with anything but the punks who call themselves that today.

And wow! How could I miss Robert "T1000" Patrick in a supporting role as well? I love that guy! Seriously though there are three actors I'm most curious to see through this film, Giovanni Ribisi (I'm loving the mustache), Sean Penn, and Emma Stone (can she pull off the fatale?)

Sure, but that only cheapens the whole traditional gangster personna thing.

Not to make light of anything here, but what ScottyRocks says is true. Hip-hop music in movie-trailers such as this cheapens the whole experience. A gangster, a REAL gangster was a very dangerous person. And they led extremely dangerous lives. This cheap hip-hop music with their tryhard lifestyles couldn't get close to what actual gangsters and policemen had to put up with in the 20s, 30s and 40s.

Okay, now I've seen the clip. The music is fine for the promotion. I don't think it detracts front the concept of the film. As much as I can't stand Sean Penn, I will see this movie.

Based upon experience and observation I disagree with your last assertion. There are parts of urban America today (like the 40 Projects I grew up in) that the early gangsters would either feel right at home in, recruit from or leave immediately. Don't confuse many modern "wanna be" gangsters from MTV with real gangsta's that are in those neighborhoods today. If you haven't done so watch HBO's "The Wire" and see how it's done today.

Not to harp too much on this tangent but there is little difference between gangster and gangsta. Both are leeches on society. The only difference being we tend to romanticize one based time(distance from events) and clothing. Extortion, murder, robbery, etc. should be frowned upon no matter how the crook is dressed.

Oh and the trailer looks pretty good. Josh Brolin seems to attach himself to good work (M.I.B. 3 notwithstanding..)
