Hmmm. Is Mr. Ed (the cartoonist..... not the talking horse) trying to boil our blood against Veronica to an even higher temperature, so that when she gets her comeuppance (And she will, boys & girls. Just wait.) it'll be all the more delicious?

Me? I'll place my money in the office pool on the option of Grandpa Timothy marrying no one and remaining the same quirky aged bachelor. Being wed to either Veronica or Prunella will morph him into someone else and change dynamics for a lot of others, even to the extent of placing Harold himself on the sidelines.

My bet's on Momma Vale throwing herself into the proceedings in one last attempt to catch the old boy for herself -- by, perhaps, revealing some unknown and embarassing fact of Veronica's past. "She can't marry you -- she's still married to that sailor she met when she was sixteen!" Or, failing that, Lena badgers Pruny into suing for breach-of-promise -- he had, in fact, proposed to her, after all. Either way, Peyton Place has nothing on Covina.

We have recordings currently available for games 1, 2, and 4 -- the others exist, but haven't yet found their way out of the archives. All the Spanish broadcasts exist too, but none have publicly circulated. And the Eagle plans to put out a World Series Extra this afternoon with the results of today's game, so keep an eye on the newsstands and the candy stores.

I was able to listen to that entire recording of Game 1 this weekend while painting the living room. Thoroughly enjoyed it - baseball more than any other sport is a game for radio.

And please don't mention the Bucky Dent game...

("Almost the entire West Coast is rooting for a Dodger victory." Aw, why bring that up?)

Black widow spiders are invading Brooklyn, with the Eagle having learned that the Health Department has been conducting a desperate "undercover" fight against the deadly creatures, concentrated in East Flatbush. Thousands of the spiders, bearing an imprint of a red hourglass on their velvety black abdomens, have been killed by crews of Health Department workmen armed with gloves and thick protective clothing, who are scouring the vacant lots where the creatures abound. The lethal pests are swarming in some parts of the seection, especially around old foundations, meadows, and marshes, and in rubbish heaps in a sector bound by 109th to 105th Streets and from Seaview Avenue to Avenue K. The bite of the spiders produces severe itching followed by abdominal pains and slowing of the heart, which, in extreme cases, can be fatal.

("Aw, don' worry 'bout it," scoffs Joe. "'At ain' noplace neah ya Ma's house. 'At's allaway outa Canawsie." "Yeah, well," replies Sally, "I ain' takin' t'baby oveh t'ere tillis t'ing blows oveh. Ma c'n c'moveh heah t'marra when we go t'bawlgame." "Well, I still ain' worried," says Joe. "Ya Ma voises a spideh? 'At's a sucka bet.")

Recapture of 30 villages and the decimation of three Rumanian cavalry regiments in a four-day Red Army offensive in the Ukraine were reported today by Moscow via dispatches from the front. A series of smashing counterattacks on the central front was also reported. Other reports stated that Soviet guerillas operating behind the German lines on the Leningrad front destroyed 22 German tractors, three armored cars, and two motorcycles, blew up a bridge and a mill occupied by the Germans, and cut Nazi communication lines in attacks on German outposts.

Exchange of 3000 British and German prisoners, many of them maimed, hinged today on reciept of a special message from the Nazi Government demanding that certain civilians also held by the British be included in the exchange. It is rumored that Adolf Hitler himself has demanded the return of former Number 3 Nazi Rudolf Hess as part of any such transaction. Hess has been held by the British since his inexplicable landing in Scotland in May, but official sources could not confirm that his specific return is demanded in the prisoner exchange, or that Hitler had requested Hess be returned at the instance of Gestapo demands.

No new gasoline stations will be allowed to open anywhere in New York City until the present fuel shortage is resolved, under an order issued today by Mayor LaGuardia. The policy was announced by the Mayor following a conference with Fire Commissioner Patrick Walsh, who issues filling station permits in the city, and will put into effect one of ten recommendations made by city gasoline conservation czar Grover Whalen to implement a "sensible program for conservation." At present 2877 gasoline stations operate in the metropolitan area, with 2109 of them in the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. It is believed that the order will not apply to permits for the retail sale of gasoline at garages, of which there already 4330 in operation in the city.

Charles A. Lindbergh declared last night in Fort Wayne, Indiana that "what we used to call representative government, American independence, and the American way of life is rapidly becoming a thing of the past. Addressing an America First Committee rally, the aviator, without naming President Roosevelt, stated that the nation is "being led by one man who has consistently evaded the checks and balances on which representative government depends -- a man who has drawn more and more dictatorial power into his own hands. Lindbergh further accused the press of emphasizing "Moscow propaganda" in its coverage of the war, and speculated that the speech may be his "last address."

The King of the Hoboes weighed in today in the controversy over the term "Bums" as applied to Our Dodgers. Speaking to reporters in Seattle, monarch of the rod-riders Jeff Davis explained that "a hobo works when he can, a tramp wouldn't work if he had to, and a bum couldn't work if he wanted to." Davis came out in support of the Flock, declaring that "just like many a deserving hobo, the Dodgers have been tossed pop-bottles when they should have been thrown bouquets. Why, the way they have hustled against the Yanks proves they're good hard-working hoboes, not 'dem bums.'"

"The Maltese Falcon" opened yesterday at the New York Strand, where Herbert Cohn found it to be "a beguiling melodrama that does nothing the ordinary way. In fact, by ordinary motion picture standards it shouldn't click. But it does, in a big way."

The only thing that doesn't make sense about that wonderful illustration is that somebody is actually calling to talk business; why is he/she not listening to the game like any other respectable person at work that day?

Talk about releasing a future classic at the wrong time, in Brooklyn anyway.

The husband with someone or the husband hired two to do the job?

Gray has been very inconsistent with the Warbuck's character in this storyline versus what we had come to know/see about Daddy.

Gould is clearly setting up a mistaken-identity event, but it should be easy to explain, yet he's working hard at it, so he must plan to take it somewhere.

I am crushed. Fitz was getting it done. What a painful loss. Just wonderful, in addition to 2021 sports' disappointment, we can live through 1941's as well.

He'd been in two Series before with the Giants and never won a game in either, and here he misses what he knows will probably be his last chance, in a game his team needed to win, because *the opposing pitcher* cracks one off his knee. I really do feel for the guy. Eighty years ago, and I can feel the pain.

Also, gawdbless Pee Wee for having the presence of mind to field the ball on the ricochet -- thus squelching the Yankee rally. That's got to rank as one of the freakiest of freak World Series plays.

President Roosevelt made public yesterday a fact-finding committee's report proposing ways to encourage effective cooperation between agencies that have raised over $90,000,000 in war relief funds since 1939, with $65,000,000 of that contributed in just the past year. The report recommends revoking the licenses of all relevant fundraising agencies at some future date and reissuing them only after the agencies have submitted concrete plans for greater cooperation among themselves in fundraising campaigns. The report noted that only a few instances of fund-raising fraud have been documented, but there is much room for improving the efficiency with with the agencies conduct their work.

A 16 year old Brooklyn boy was arrested for illegal possession of a gun yesterday after he collapsed near the corner of Ocean Avenue and Main Street. Police originally thought that Edward Zekowski of 475 Washington Avenue, a student at Harlem High School in Manhattan, had collapsed from hunger, but upon examination he was found to be bleeding from a gunshot wound in his right thigh. The youth told police he accidentally shot himself with the revolver, which he took from his mother's summer home at Brookhaven, intending to use it to "make some easy money." The boy was taken to South Side Hospital at Bay Shore, before being booked for violation of the Sullivan Law.

A 13 year old boy in Red Bank, New Jersey yesterday followed a trail of blood into a cornfield, where he found in a shallow grave the body of his mother. Forty-nine-year-old Mrs. Edna Aszman had been missing from her home since last night. Police stated that her body was face up in the grave, with her face bashed in to the point where her features were unrecognizable. Police are seeking 25-year-old Robert Turner, "Negro farm hand" employed by Mrs. Aszman, for questioning in connection with the murder. He also mysteriously disappeared yesterday afternoon. A small hatchet was also found in the cornfield, but police would not confirm if it was considered to be the murder weapon. Mrs. Aszman, who was well-known in Red Bank for running her 20-acre farm singlehanded had hired Turner as a helper about three weeks ago.

The Football Dodgers meet the Washington Redskins today before an anticipated capacity crowd at Griffith Stadium. If you haven't been paying attention to the National Football League standings, the Grid Flock is deadlocked for first place with the Football Giants in the Eastern Division, and must win today's game to keep pace. The Giants are heavily favored to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers at Forbes Field. The Dodgers have won two straight games to kick off the 1941 season, beating the Detroit Lions 14-7 and the Philadelphia Eagles 24-13, but Coach Jock Sutherland is still not satisfied with the defense, which has been wobbly in both of the wins so far.

Old Timer H. Schlunsen, now of St. Petersburg, Florida, but once of Flatbush, has fond memories of twenty-five years ago, when the then-Robins hosted the Boston Red Sox in Ebbets Field's first World Series. Not only did he see every game, he saw them in an official capacity, as first lieutenant in charge of ballpark security under Inspector Sam A. McElroy. His favorite memory is of three men from Philadelphia, who showed up at the gate with an extra ticket, and asked Mr. Schlunsen to see that some worthy fan got to use it. He then spotted two young boys loitering near the Bedford Avenue entrance, and brought them both in to see the game on the one ticket. It was a box seat, too.

Jack Benny and his gang are back on the air for another season over WEAF, tonight at 7 PM. For the first time in years, they're opening the season broadcasting from New York. Don't even ask for tickets, because they've been gone for weeks.

Behold Caniff the master.

Caniff did consider taking the storyline in another direction today and I just happen to have a copy of his rough draft:

"Step on it Dude, Captain Judas has Raven Sherman and Burma in that truck. If he gets away from us, Anything can happen!"

"You're right Terry, we can't let, um, er, let's think about this for a moment: A guy could get killed trying to save them now. Sure, they're blonde and pretty, but they've been nothing but trouble and Burma, I never got anything there - did you? Instead, we could turn this truck around and find Hu Shee."

"Dude, we couldn't, we have to [a bullet pings off the hood right in front of Terry], well, if we go after Hu Shee, can we stop for breakfast first?"

"Sure kid."
