From today, on the Republican side, if Chris Christie is found guilty of knowing about the "bridge" affair, then whether he is legally disqualified, I would love it if Republicans would reflect him. If Hillary's email issues turns out as some charge - that she serially lied about it and put public security at risk - then whether she is ever charged with a crime or not, I'd love it if Democrats would reflect her. What I'm trying to show is it shouldn't be about one side attacking the other candidate as "a crook," but both sides saying I won't even support my own candidate if he / she is crooked (even if technically not able to be charged). That will take a cultural change, but we've done it before.

To the bigger point, this is what we need, not more partisan gun fights - we'll always have those - but more of each side cleaning up its own house. I only think that will happen when the people say no more - no more shady / half-corrupt candidates.

Agreed. But hopefully, at some point, the surprise candidate won't be a TV millionaire celebrity real estate guy or a full-on socialist, but a decent person without the stink of dirty dealing all around them. It can happen - the system doesn't always get worse.

So I was debating whether to post this in the GMO thread or this one, but since it is fundamentally a lack of populace education that allows this insult to the human condition to visage with so called 'reason', I figured here would be better. This is absolutely one of my hot buttons...

I was half asleep when I heard the TV alarm go off to this horrible woman... I awoke instantly when she began to state how it is in reducing the waste of under purchased food by increasing the shelf life, that the problem of hunger would be fixed.... I have to say, this is idiocy at its finest. The supposed notion that people simply do not buy food because they don't want to is ludicrous. The reality is people CANNOT afford to buy food that is quality (in the sector that suffers from hunger). Shoot, I am a perfect middle class worker, I do ok, somewhat well even, and I STILL have to make a budget to eat healthy.... Fruits and Vegetables are astronomically expensive... I bought grapes yesterday and paid $8.79 for a lb and half!!!!

My point?? To say that the solution is to REDUCE the quality and originality of natural food simply to substantiate profit margins and utilize the ignorance of people as a scapegoat is beyond insulting.... The problem is STRUCTURAL; Not Supply, Not Resources, Not anything except that our Food Sector has fallen into the hands of Imperialism...

As far as I'm concerned, they can keep Tech, they can keep Discretionaries, they can keep Everything, but Do Not mess with our Food Supply or Water Supply...

What most people do not understand is that if we allow that which we consume to be owned by the hands of profit driven pockets, we will forever be at the mercy of an artificial God; Money will drive Humanity... More than it already does.

While at the same time, we seem to have forgotten how to make nutritious and inexpensive meals.
I have eaten a lot of beans and rice (starting with dried beans and using a can of diced tomatoes).
And polenta, with a small amount of walnuts (and mushrooms, if you want to splurge).

Corporate America has convinced people to eat more expensive food, and they have won out over common sense.

Where do you live that 1 1/2 lbs of grapes cost $8.79? It's a couple of bucks where I live and they don't even grow around here. If you're paying premium for "örganic" grapes I hope you're buying them from a grower you know and trust. All sorts of stuff gets labeled "organic" that is nothing of the sort, and you pay through the nose for it.

You have hit it, right on the head, well said. Since retirement, I do the shopping and the cooking, we eat well and spend far less, because I shop everyday, just buying for our immediate needs. No waste, no overspend. But such a regime is beyond most people, fact is, we are dictated to by the clock and the supermarket giants know this, that is why they control suppliers, charging them to display their wares in prime locations in the store. That is why they reject so called ugly fruit and veg, it has to be cosmetically perfect and that is why they push the loyalty cards so much. They know you through those cards, what you buy, when you buy it, how you pay, card or cash.
If the poor and hungry were the real issue they could do no better than the hotel where my God-daughter was married. Her father, my lifelong friend, wanted the best for his little girl. We sat down to a sumptuous feast, later, during the more active part of the evening, a massive buffet spread was set out for guests, it was hardly touched. Looking at all the food that would be wasted my friend seemed wistful. A success in life he might be, but he was raised in very poor conditions and he never forgot the saying: Waste not, want not.
To his delight, and many others too, the hotel manager approached him and asked if he would agree to the leftovers being boxed up into take-away cartons, given to the Salvation Army, for them to feed the homeless and hungry. It was a fabulous wedding, and that final gesture was like the icing on the cake.

It's been customary for our local supermarket chains to give at least some of their outdated stuff to the area food pantries and soup kitchens, but one of them recently sparked a huge outcry by announcing that it would no longer be doing this due to "a change in corporate policy." Once this hit the papers, they had to backpedal fast, but finally agreed to contribute only the waste food from one store, to a single shelter. The rest, in their view, can go hang. They also make a point of locking their dumpsters to keep the homeless from scavenging. Guess where I *don't* spend my money.

We usually put out a big spread at work for performers appearing live on our stage, but I insist that the workers have the right to scrounge that table after the performers have eaten what they wanted. We'll put out a full spread of cold cuts, expensive cheese, fine bread, fruits and salads and drinks and all sorts of other such stuff, and nine times out of ten the performers will eat half a celery stick and a ribbon of prosciutto and leave the rest. As soon as the show's over, we all race down there to eat our fill. "For it is written in the scripture, 'You shall not muzzle the ox that treads out the grain.'"

As far as shopping goes, I'm in full agreement with the shop small/shop daily routine. I'm shopping for one person, I have a six cubic foot refrigerator with a freezer compartment the size of two shoeboxes, and I see no point at all in loading up on a lot of stuff that would spoil long before I could ever use it. I hate these deals where you can't get just one small chicken breast, you've got to buy a package of six of them or none at all, and I refuse to do it.

I live in Miami. They range from $3.99 per lb to $4.99. The good ones. Not organic, and not seedless genetically modified ones either. Mid grade grapes.

Seedless grapes are not GMOs. They are a product of select non-pollinating cultivation and have been around for over 600 years. Likewise for seedless bananas (I'd bet dollars to donuts that most people here have never seen a seeded banana in real life) and watermelons. Seedless fruits are no more GMOs than are orange carrots or Brussels sprouts.

On a side note, mid-grade seeded grapes around here run $1.78 - $2.98 per pound (according to the current local ad), depending of is you want black or red. Sounds like yours are unusually expensive, which surprises me in Florida.

Many of our fruits and vegetables are out of whack priced here... Tomatoes for instance are usually $3.99-$5.99 per pound!!! Cucumbers are $1.59 each. Lemons are 89 cents each. Crazy I know. If I drive up to Palm Beach, prices drop big time...
