Bond,

To my eye the Borso looks great.....the 30's/40's look I like .....shape the brim, snap it down in front and wear it downtown on Saturday......you have arrived!

I picked up an old Stetson today at a Church sale, with the intention of converting it. I believe I am capable of doing so, except for the leather liner. It is very worn, and looks pretty bad. How would I go about replacing it? I apologize if this has been answered already in this thread, but I still have a lot more to read in here.
You can get replacements, but you may want to contact a real hatter and have them do it, as it is a lot of sewing to do it right!

Thanks, Chepstow and LMH2, I wasn't sure how it would turn out. I am much happier with the way it looks on my head now. I want to convert a western hat next. I should be able to get old ones at thrift stores here for pretty cheap.

I was very tempted to grab a stetson on ebay, it had a 3 inch edged brim that was flat, 6 inch tall straight sided crown, cowboy hat. It would have made a great fedora, and alas, it sold for only 40 bucks! And it was a cream almost white hat, clean!

if one succeeds Makeover it is a good thing. Not everyone is a type for a Homburger Hat.

Thanks for sharing you pics, I am more partial to the fedora, but there are those that can wear a Hberg well. Nice hat!

Turned out good Phineas, and I see that you left the brim binding on too.
I was wondering if that also helps to keep the brim in it's curled state, but I guess not.
Nice job!

Thanks, Bond. I really like the way it looks with the binding on. I was hoping it wouldn't get distorted when I flattened it out. I just dampened the brim with a wet cloth, set the iron on wool setting and after about ten minutes it was done. Then about ten more on the crown. It's like a whole new hat.

Bond, I thought that Borso Homburg looked good before the change, but your vision has transformed it into a real beauty.

Some nicely done conversions but the main thing I DON'T understand, why buy a Homburg if you DON'T WANT a Homburg ? Seems like a waste of a good hat to me JMHO :)

When I bought mine I thought I wanted it.
I didn't like the way it looked on my head. I listed it in the classifieds here and got no response. I decided to make it into something I could use.

I buy homburgs not because I want homburgs but because I want homburgs to convert to fedoras....My reasoning: (1) hburgs are usually high quality hats, and since they are relatively inexpensive and plentiful, one gets a lot of hat for the $.(2) not many people think they look very good or feel comfortable in a homburg. At one time, yeah, but now they are more reminicent of zoot-suiters and pimps rather than bankers and merchants.....I am personally sorry about this. I would like to wear one but I know I would not feel right in it...but why let them go to waste out there? ....(3) I am a do-it-yourselfer who likes to tinker with stuff....Even if I am not very good at it......So, I buy a homburg or two from time to time...

Well, the hat's still there, it just changed personality. I hadn't considered Spoiler's notion of Homburgs being high quality, plentiful, and not too expensive, but I think he's right. These conversions seem very successful, too. I might just try one myself, except that Homburgs in 7 1/2 are probably almost as rare as decent fedorae.
