Hope this is the right thread for my question. I'm looking for a tall enough crown when opened up to try my hand at this horseshoe crease. Probably should end up after crease with a crown around 5-5.25" tall. At this point I don't care about a 4 or 5" brim width; 3.5" would probably balance out & look okay for my first attempt. Likewise I'm a 7-5/8 (62cm to be more precise) LO. Do I need to be looking for a Stagecoach?

A Stagecoach would be a choice. There are others Resistols with a big fat crown like the one I wear yesterday.
Please don't do it on a Tom Mix if you plan to trim the brim...
But on your head size... It might be hard to find.

Here's an example of trimming a brim on a hat recently where a moth chewed a chunk out of the edge of the brim. By taking a 1/8 off I was able to remove the bite and still maintain a relative brim width

No I would never do that to a Tom Mix. I have a vintage Stetson with an original Montana Peak crease & I would never open it up either. And I don't plan to cut the brim anyway. I used to occasionally see an old Stetson Hoss around and most of the time they were in larger sizes (on a smaller guy they look funny) but I haven't seen one anywhere in yrs. Or a Boss of the Plains. I'm just looking for a cheapie body to try my hand with that horseshoe crease.

Yes the Stagecoach hats have nice tall crowns,about 6 1/4"-6 1/2" open.

A cowtrack/horseshoe crease is not easy.

My vote's for the Stagecoach too. They have a tall 6 1/2 inches open crown, (the crowns are pretty tapered up, though). That should give you plenty of hat to work with. Sometimes you can get lucky enough and pick one up pretty cheap off ebay. I don't think I ever paid over $40 for one. Although, I've seen them priced a lot higher than that too. They're plenty tough to take just about any kind of abuse you can throw at them if you choose to wear one to work in. I always say I'm going to save one back for work wear but I get too attached to them that I don't want to get any of them dirty.
