The classic flannel-shirts, I am amazed!

I'm a big fan of flannel shirts as well as the Pendleton wools. I used to wear Woolrich shirts as well but haven't shopped for them in years. Trench friend, Murano is one of the "store" brands of Dillard's dept. stores here in the states. They make a nice shirt, I've owned a number of them.

I look for Pendleton's (60's or earlier) and get Filson's on sale only. Have Carhartt, Wrangler, Field & Stream and others I've found.
Just wish I had more cooler weather here to enjoy them...

I wish those guys made larger sizes. I see so many nice flannel shirts,but when the XXL is barely a 46 before a wash, it gets tough. I have managed a Filson, and Pike Bros make great ones in larger sizes too.

Iron Heart are one of the few Japanese brands that go up to a 46" chest. That's largely the influence of having an international office and a large fan base of large Germans!

I think that 3Sixteen top out a touch smaller, but might be worth a look. They're a US company, so sizing is a bit more generous than the Japanese brands.

Indigofera are probably your best choice if you're really enormous. That's because they're sized for Vikings, being a Swedish company. Their XL shirts are probably right for a 46" chest, and I've seen a few go up to XXL.

I guess that at the end of the day, I'm glad these brands that charge insane amounts don't come in my sizes.
I appreciate good things, but $300+ for a casual shirt just won't happen for me (for many reasons).
But if you have the money and enjoy them, that's great. I'd rather get a pair of boots than a flannel shirt.

I happened to be in a Pendleton Outlet store yesterday (WOO HOO!) They have some pretty good size sirts, lots of Xs and tall offerings. All on a clearance rack!!

The next days, I will go to my favorite clothing-store (chain-store), next bigger city, and look on their flannel-shirts, which costs 29,99 EUR ("premium"-line-storebrand) and looking great, to me. I will look exactly, how good/solid the quality is, because 30 EUR are not expensive, but aren't cheap, too! If they are looking well-made, I will buy one and than test it, before eventually buying more of them.

Here are 13°C with freezy winds. Just coming back from supermarket, buying drinks, retracting the new shirt, now sweating a little. Must be the feeling of lumberjack?

HAHA, in (discounter)Supermarket at the moment, they are offering flannel-shirts, only with the classic lumberjack-designs, priced 9,99 EUR. I standed there and looking more exact on these shirts.
But, with my experience on discounter-offerings the last 15 years, I don't trust them that much, so I didn't buy one, for now.

Yes, and unless they have changed, they are wool. CPO Shirts, I believe is what you are looking for. They were HUGE fashion statement back in the late 1960s.

You gents might want to compare 100% (washable) wool flannel, from Pendleton. Think, ShortBaldingGuy, and me, as we both wear them pretty regularly in cooler weather. MUCH warmer than cotton flannels. More expensive, but well worth the investment, as they outlast the cotton many times over (just keep the moths away)....Moreover, the Beachboys, FKA the "Pendletones," wore them on their first album cover, if that matters. Check 'em out!

+1! HatsRme (Charlie) has it spot on! The Pendleton wool shirts are more versatile than cotton flannels IMO. In my family it is the norm - my father and his father wore Pendletons. I will have to look harder as I know we have pictures of them wearing the shirts.

My Pendletons Board Shirts can be worn over a collared sport shirt and be seen as acceptable downtown as well as country in my area of the world (Minnesota, USA). The wool board shirts are "over shirts." Over a fancy-fancy t-shirt, or collared shirt and over the slacks (not intended to be tucked in). They are the right length to disappear under a Filson Mackinaw, but provide all the utility and fashion. The quality of wool fabric is excellent and has been over the years. If you wish a tucked in - check out what Charlie mentioned, the Sir Pendletons. They are luxurious wool shirts. No scratchy, annoying wool fibers in those shirts. Yell or search the What Hat Are You Wearing thread and you can catch many of us wearing Pendletons during the week.

I have worn the shirts in my part of the world and traveled extensively with them. In fact I brought a Beach-boys themed one to the Olympic Games in London not long ago and received oodles of positive comments wearing it about in the cooler London evenings. Folks of many nations recognized the shirt. My party received a round of drinks in salute to the beach boys in a certain London pub. (I was not the only one wearing the same Pendleton. In fact we had agreed between several of my friends that we would wear the same Pendleton shirt.) I have worn them on a long plane trip, snuggled under them on a cool airplane ride, spruced it up with a spritz of hot steam at my hotel room and headed out to a "downtown dinner" in the same shirt.

As to price - look on the Pendleton website and check the sale options. During the times they change their offerings the wool shirts can be had for as much as 1/2 the retail price. Amazon has many with sale price offerings thru the year. I have purchased sale and regular price items over the years. No buyer remorse at my house.

Try a Pendleton. As to a cotton flannel, I use them for rough outside work and find them lacking. I rarely wear them outside the yard and never "downtown."

And FWIW, when in the Pendleton company store a few days ago the manager asked about my much older wool flannel Pen. Shirts, (from my father's closet) and if they seemed to be a heavier gauge fabric. When back home to check, I was triply impressed with the older ones. As great as they are currently, they don't make 'em like they used to!

Superfluous, I have owned that RJB flannel, own that blue FH/glory park flannel, and have preordered the orange/black Flat Head since they remade it this winter, and it should be coming soon. Fantastic choices.

Guys, I implore you to check out Flat Head's flannels... Here's my current favorite, shuttle-woven, very irregular on the top (you can clearly see the pattern, brushed for super-softness on the inside, complete with mother-of-pearl snaps.

Just checked them quickly. Look good in the pics, of course. Why are they so expensive? Pendleton also offers MOP snap buttons on many shirts.

Must they be cleaned or laundered; how often? Do they nicely fade over time? I'll be checking into these! Thanks!

They're expensive no matter where you buy them, but it's of course easier to buy straight from japan. A bit more palatable of a price at $170. Of course you do get exchanges and better help getting your size with western retailers....

Anyway, it's a couple factors. Shuttle-woven fabric (selvedge) produces a lot less fabric per unit time than a projectile-loom. So for that reason, you've going to see selvedge fabric flannels cost a lot more than modern flannels made on projectile looms. Also, Flat Head doesn't just buy fabrics from a mill. I'm fairly certain that all of their fabrics are developed in-house, no one else can get them... Another thing to mention is that it's not even "just" a check pattern, it's actually a thick herringbone woven to look like a block pattern. I can't think of any other brand that does that and I think it's pretty neat.

Adding MOP snaps, having it made in japan, using felled seams, etc etc. are all the things that make the shirt expensive. I think it's worth it. Really, it boils down to the same reason why leather jackets are expensive... expensive materials coupled with nice details, made sweatshop-free... stuff gets expensive!
