The Captain's (Jürgen Prochnow) Sweater in the film "Das Boot" search

Hi Guys,
I know i´m a LITTLE bit late on this thread , but anyway... Maybe this is still useful to some of you:

The Jumper Jürgen Prochnow is wearing in the movie is called a "Troyer" in Germany. This is basically the term for this kind of jumper: knitted wool with a zip on the upper part of the front. It´s a very typical garment in northern Germany, especially for sailors and fischermen.

If you look for "Troyer" on the Internet you will find it from Fashion Shops as well as from Shops that sell military / outdoor or working clothes. They are offered in all kinds of materials, but if you want to go for one, make sure that you go for pure new wool.

I have one in dark blue made of ultra heavy wool. It´s labelled "Elbe II". This is maybe the longest lasting piece of garment that I own. I bought this Jumper at least 25 years ago and have been wearing it over and over. The quality ist absolutely astonishing. It has accumulated a few small holes over the years, so I don´t wear it "on the street" anymore, but it is still my premier piece of clothing for working in the garden or just haning around in the house. You literally don´t need a jacket when wearing this one, even in light rain. This jumper will most probably survive me.

Thinking of using one for cycling, but its anything like my Submariner by Outdoor Knitwear, might be too much.

If you mean something like this, the style is called Troyer, at least in Germany.

You could buy that style also from Boss, Nike, PRL, Levi´s, Lacoste, Esprit, Only, G-Star, Paul&Shark, A&F, Hilfiger....and almost any other international brand producing clothes.

...and it’s not too unlikely that an old German brand like Boss even produced some Kriegsmarine-originals during that time...

some of the details we worked hard to achieve was the fit, type of Zip bronzed brass, length of the troyer
( 1/4 Zip opening) cotton herringbone tape on the inside of the collar. yarn is 100% wool which would have been used in
the time period due to inherent fire resistance.

By-Coincidence, Outdoor Knitwear just sent me a promotional email. i have always been impressed with the quality of the various sweaters that I have purchased from them and by the service from the sales team. There a few threads on this website that mention them.

I seem to have a strange tendency to keep coming across these types of sweaters with slight variations. Years ago I had one that I got from a thrift store. When I outgrew it, I happened to find another, not too long after, again in a thrift store.

The collar is tight when zipped up and the brass zip is lovely. i really like the deep welt at the hem and the cuffs with thumb holes, will try and get some pics in the next day or so (its put away and not really getting much wear over the summer - too warm!)

I don't have one of these myself yet, though I am attracted to them for all those features. Interestingly similar to motorcycle sweaters in the USA in the 20s / 30s. I have read of German motorcyclists wearing them post-war, though I have always wondered which came first, given that I have seen other elements of German militaria (Panzerwraps I think were one, from memory) that followed civilian design influences (as opposed to the more familiar transition from military to civilian fashion).

As far as I know these have initially been designed to be used as a general piece of utility clothing or workwear, very widely used in many professions. First with button closed collar, later zip closed.
You will find at least one piece of this style in literally any workwear shop around here, from acrylic or fleece over sheep wool to Opossum wool up to Yak sack under wool.
From the very cheapest, most crappiest quality to high end at high three-figure price.

Here’s some pics.
It came in a nice cotton bag (where it’s currently been living until the cold weather arrives)
The neck when lifted and zipped up is very long but a nice fit when rolled over and very fitting to the neck. I’ll probably wear it zipped open (unless I'm really cold!) as i think the white trim looks weird when zipped up (from a distance I'd look like a vicar!).
The thumb holes are neat for keeping hands warm on very cold days. And the edging on them doesn’t protrude too much when cuffs rolled back.
It’s well made and has nice strengthening patches between neck and shoulder.
