Where to get my first newsboy.

Down here in good old Aussie as some of you may know cheap hats can be hard to come by unless you like what I can only discribe as poo on your head - which personally I don't. On top of this the range of stores is somewhat minimal (from what I've seen) - probably the reason for high prices.

Now I have a few options here;
>I can buy new - $100AU
>or perhaps I could buy off ebay - but there wasn't much good around when I looked last.
>or lastly I could make my own - which I'm leaning toward cos I'm handy with a stitch nbut the choice of patterns isn't great either.

Now being somewhat finacially challenged :p the first option is probably a rule out (at least for my first newsboy, i mean i'm not sure if i love em yet) so does anyone have any advice re making them or buying them second hand.

Cheers,
Drew.

both Bwear and Hat People post to Australia. Personally prefer my Hat People cap - perfect for a Melbourne winter.

Here's a cap I just found at a 2nd hand store. I live in a part of the world that has little use for such a cap, but I couldn't resist buying it. I know nothing about these classic looking caps, and that's what I'm wondering about.

How long has Filson been making them? I see that Cabella's still sells them, but the sheep fur on the sides of the cap look about half of what's on this one.

One thing I do know, is that if it gets cold enough to wear it, it will keep me vehwy vehwy woorm.

My favourite winter hat is very similar to this, though it's Woolrich. It's modern, but the ear flaps are at least that thick. Very nice hat where I come from (Michigan's Upper Peninsula).

Sorry about the quality of the pictures. I don't have a camera at the moment so I'm using old shots from my old camera.

I asked a friend who had a vintage clothing business to keep an eye open for Taylor hats or caps...

She remembered the Taylor aurally when she came across these Tailored Caps... I think she got them on Ebay, and they may have been posted here in another context. I bought a few from her, though they are far too small for me.

PB090255.jpg

All 8 panel caps from the late 20s or early 30s, all NOS, mint, unworn condition.

A Blue-grey (again, pics are stinky, colour is off, sorry)

PB090253.jpg

A brown-grey crescent weave

PB090249.jpg

And my favourite, a brown- tan herringbone with blue-grey windowpane check

PB090242.jpg
PB090241.jpg

All are Tailored Caps

PB090240.jpg

Adjustable using this rather fancy buckle

PB090238.jpg

All are also tiny (I have nothing to say about "the myth"), no larger than a 7 when fully extended, and probably best looking at a slightly tighter adjustment than that. I think they may have been childrens or "young men's" wear.

Anyway, there they are.

Bumping this post up! It deserves to be seen again.

Not sure when Filson started making this specific cap, but the firm itself started in 1897 to supply clothing and equipment to the participants in the Klondike Gold Rush. The cap is still available from Filson as the Double Mackinaw Cap.

Here's the link to the Filson page which includes a history of the company.

With the exception of some of the "fashion" items recently added to their lineup, Filson garments are of unsurpassed quality. I have a double Mackinaw Cruiser, wool vest, waxed cotton rain parka, traveler's vest, socks, billfold, belt, all of which will apparently be handed down to my grandchildren as they show no sign of wearing out.

Fresh arrival. As I hoped, the seller couldn't measure it correctly(caps are really tough). Listing said 21-1/2". Its only a tiny bit snug fresh out of the box and should ease in perfectly. Beautiful linen and white leather sweatband.

Here are two new caps...

Here are two new caps that I've purchased within the past few months.

The first is a blue linen Country Gentleman:

The second is a black linen Christy's of London:

These both have been nice caps for the summer.

Here's my Hat People full cut.

My daily personal fav. One of two from them I own and wear...

I checked out their website, I was thinking of maybe getting the extra full cut. Now I just need to decide fabric. I think gray would be most versatile, though I like the houndstooth, too.

I have two Extra Full Cut caps myself, one being the grey you mention. It is indeed a versatile colour. Take into account they are really EXTRA Full Cut, and may need a little time to adjust yourself to the voluminous crown dimensions.

I've never owned a gatsby, so wearing a cap instead of a hat would be a whole new thing for me anyway. Do you have any pictures with the cap? There's only the one on their website that I've seen, it may help me decide between full and extra full. I'm looking for something akin to this size-wise:

extra full will drape, mine's a full cut and has a light drape to the sides...

Either one would work for the vintage look. They're not stiffened as in the vintage picture you have. You could starch it a little to have it stick out, but from the factory they'll drape.

I have one in brown and one in blue and that cover most of what I wear...
