The first, second, third, fourth and fifth rows were added since my last update on 07/23/2016.

This is beyond incredible and something to behold, Steve. Makes me wonder though how many pages the collection of other hats would take...

R. Hecht Leipzig - Theater Passage - Grimmaishe Str. 12, Wool, 58cm, 160 grams probably 1930s. The Wool is dense and the finish is very smooth. There is only a small fragment of main paper stamp remaining behind the sweatband. The main paper tag is the same type as a number of other German hats I have that don't have a company mark. My guess is that these hats were made by one of the large scale German Hat Companies that were located in Eastern Germany that produced both Wool and Fur Felt hats but didn't survive WWII.

The above cm size tag and main paper stamp fragment are similar to the this hat.

For the benefit of anyone unsure of Britspeak, we call the garbage collectors, the dustmen. It goes back to the time when we put everything into a single, galvanised 'dustbin.' Everything including the ashes from the coal fire. Pre-central heating days we all burned coal fires.
Being a dustman meant you got filthy every single day. Not for you the luxury of bright hi-viz uniform, nor wheeled bins, nor mechanical lifting equipment on the back of the truck.
The reason that I painted that picture is because I saw, on TV recently, a great story about a group of Dustmen who were given a load of quality clothes by some local toff. Included were top hats, bowlers, morning suits, white tie and tails to name but a few. The dustmen were delighted and started wearing these clothes whilst out on their rounds. So popular were these guys that they made, first their local press, then they made the nationals. Here's the dustmen of Lyme Regis:

This is cool. Some of my derby hats are certainly bullet proof. Their use in equestrian events as "helmets" is legendary. I have a early 1920s Cavanagh that is stronger than most modern hard hats that construction workers would wear.

Wasn't head protection one of the motivations behind the bowler's development? Protection for gamekeepers against poachers and low-hanging branches, or somesuch?

I picked up a bowler hat yesterday in a garagesale for 10 euro. Aquila Beste deutsche Marke on the sweatband. The sweat also mention "Stammhaus Guben" (right side) and SHG (left side). Certainly German make therefore and pre-war. Interesting piece and very comfy. But alas what I thought was dirt and dust appeared to be moth damage. So it bears battle scars on the back of the crown and the underside of the brim. For that price who's complaining?

Close to a century old and survived a light squishing in the mail. Had to steam a dent out of the top but it wasn't an issue at all. It's in near mint condition and the sweatband looks and feels almost brand new.
