I happen to really like my 21st century Christys of London fur felt bowler, even if it does weigh 7.6 ounces, not only for its classic styling, but because its ultra-sturdy construction provides me with excellent protection from falling rocks, icicles, and ill-advised mugging attempts.

Insofar as this is "The Bowler or Derby Hat" thread, can anyone identify the make of the bowler(s) that Patrick Macnee wore in his role as John Steed in the television series "The Avengers"?
Can anyone find any views of the inside of his bowlers?

If I recall correctly, he always(?) wore bowlers appropriate to his environment.
Black ones in the city, brown ones in the country, and grey ones while out driving in his vintage motorcar.

He wore a varied assortment of crown shapes, but the grey and brown one pictured above are either Herbert Johnson or another retailer, but were made by the same company that produced bowlers for several big name stores.

I've owned three bowlers that have had identical proportions and construction, one from Herbert Johnson, one from Dunn and Co, and one from Harrods.

Totally agree. I work in Lower Manhattan. When the snow starts melting (and chunks of ice start falling from 25 or 50 floors above) the Christys bowler goes on. :eusa_clap

There was a "The Avengers" episode in which John Steed (Patrick Macnee) was bashed on the head with a heavy blunt instrument by a villain during the course of a fracas, to no apparent effect whatsoever. When, afterwards, Tara King (Linda Thorson) queries Steed as to how this was possible, he removes his bowler, gives it a couple of extremely solid sounding taps with his knuckles, and praises traditional sturdy British hatmaking.

Patrick Macnee, in his role as John Steed in "The Avengers", was most likely the most reknowned bowler-wearing personage ever, even more so than Charlie Chaplin.

I'm sorry to hear of his passing. At 93, he had a good, long run. R.I.P. I used to watch the Avengers as a single-digit kid. I considered Steed the epitome of "class" and Diana Riggs woke up my interest in women for the first time when I saw her in one of her leather bodysuits.

My first hat that wasn't a baseball cap was a straw derby that my Mother had brought back from a trip to Lancaster, PA. I had just gotten out of school and was laboring for a masonry outfit, mixing mud and humping brick and block during the Summer. That derby was worn every day with the brim pulled down as a sun hat. It finally rotted out from all of the sweat it absorbed. It was also instrumental to my getting back into hats these many years later. I started looking for a straw derby like that one and discovered all sorts of straw hats much more suited to my purpose.

I've been considering a snuff colored derby lately, but don't know what it would look like on old, long-haired freak like myself. I'll find my way to a hat shop in the next few weeks and see. I do know that I'll never look as right and proper as Patrick Macnee.

1880's/1890's Derby (part1)

1880's/1890's Derby

There is no makers tag under the sweatband, only a size tag. I believe the makers mark is printed on the liner, but I have never seen this one before. The derby has a very tight curl on the very short brim. The crown is very round and low and is very similar to other 1880's/1890's derbies that I own. The sweatband also has the very early slant stitching.

Hückel Flexible Melone arrived today!
Nice old piece should be in a size 57 but is a 58.
The condition is good also the nice old hat box is in good condition!
