GREAT derby!! I have a Howard as well. I was able to do a little bit of research on the company from the American Hatter Publications and that hat looks to be from the late 1890's-very early 1900's. Its very similar to mine.

Howard was a brand name used by the Freeman Brothers of New York

Thats a wonderful Howard, i'm a big fan of that sage/copper mix on older derbies. The brim curl is really interesting on this one, it's a shorter brim with a very flat curls and binding.

Congratulations, OCMH! That hat is a real beauty. I have admired it on Etsy, and tried to convince myself that it might be a 7 3/8 LO, but the numbers just would not cooperate.

Thank you gents, that Howard is more than likely my second oldest hat behind my Dunlap silk bowler. Really spectacular hat.

Mayser, thats a superb melone you posted. I still need to eventually pick up an old austrian melone, everyone i've seen always looks just outstanding in quality.

I lost out on a few auctions today, but I did manage to get this one. I know i'm a bit of a broken record, I've just realized that I always seem to go for a bowler over a fedora, so i've whittled those down to a choice few and focused on finding wonderful old bowlers of all shapes and shades.

That seller did a great job on the auction photos, the color is more of rich coffee brown in person though. You made the right call, i've had a few sellers mess up measurements recently, myself included. This one was a dead on 22".

These are some real beauties.
Of course my horse, I share your affinity for non black derbies, and you have acquired some amazing ones !

Here are a few silly selfies from recent wearings. I believe one is a soft Dalton, and the other a very old Mallory.

Mayser, measures 58.5 cm, 177 grams, very good condition, probably early 1900s. There is a paper label but I didn't want to disturb the sweatband which is very comfortable (self conforming). It has an offset bow which I really like and is also less common. It was made for the famous München hat store Johann Zehme (Royal Bavarian Court Supplier).
