The Bowler or Derby Hat

Battersby bowler in black. Size 58 (7 1/8 English), but it seems a bit smaller than that. Great smooth finish to the felt, so it's a fur felt one. Feels lighter than it actually is at 144 grams. Difficult to date this one, but based on liner, tight brim curl and sweat I'd say forties, late thirties maybe. This one was used as a riding hat at one point: there was a ribbon in the box it came in and on both sides of the sweatband some stitches have been cut to accommodate it.

I am a bowler guy and just picked up this Knox. Really digging it! I’m relatively new to the vintage hat thing, but I am learning. Would y’all be kind enough to help me with the date? I would guess 1920s to 1930s maybe? Here are some pictures:

Also a great hat... I would guess this one to be 1930s to 1940 or so. Is there a paper stiffener to the liner at the crown?

I wore this derby today... I posted it back some years ago but maybe worth another look. It is the earliest derby in my collection - late 1890s to early 1900s, unusual for its very deeply scooped curl, wide ribbon without a bow and the visible stitches at the edge of the D'Orsay curl. It fits well and is a joy to wear, especially in a stiff breeze.

Both are examples of exceptional bowlers. Wow. Alan, the curled brim makes it look very "western". The crown (block) looks much more rounded than many of the vintage bowlers. Again, two great hats!

I keep coming back and looking at this, and every time I do I like it even more. Unique and amazing are the two words that come to my mind.

P. & C. Habig Wien Berlin "Special - Qualität Reine Handarbeit / Special Qualität" , 60 cm, 133 grams, possibly 1920s. This one is really fantastic and in near mint condition. It came with a P. & C. Habig Wien Paper Hat Holder. The seller said both belonged to his grandfather so it probably came with the Stiff Felt.

Proving they're still out there! Super find, Steve. Love the hat stand as well.

Aeroleger bowler hat. Belgian made (I think), but could also be French. No labels under the sweat. I bought it because of the really cool looking sweatband. Size 57 with therim at 5cm and crown 12cm. Likely made of woolfelt and at 160 grams not as lightweight as the name suggests, but maybe Belgium has some heavier air. Very nice bowler all in all, but too bad the postal services decided to use their gorilla to test the veracity of the story that you can stand on a bowler. You can, but the hat won't hold. I dented it out, but a few battle scars remain. A bit wide for me. An oldie, probably 1930's.

Nice find, Stefan. Shame about the heavy handed postal service.
