Gray hat from Rogers Peat 50's medium brown sweat 2" wide

The oval medallion was used for many decades, in numerous colors
Brown Borsalino with dark brown sweat 60's-70's
I recently purchased a Borsalino with the same kind of white sticker and price tag of $22.00 in a Rogers and Peet hat box. I think the sticker indicates ~1961-65. It’s the nicest felt I have ever handled. Pictures above from previous post I am responding to.

Here is one from 1963 in a dark moss with flecks of blue and grey.
Open: 5-3/4 inches
Centre-creased: 4-1/2 to pinch and 5 to side
Brim: 2 inches
Black ribbon: 2 inches and a wind trolley

The brim edge seems to be similar to that of the Stetson Mode Edge style, or a kind of pressed felt.

There is a number ‘33489’, but the paper was brittle so hard to photograph.

That Borsalino selling for $59 in 1963 is equivalent to $505 today when you factor in inflation. That seems way too high, right, for 1963? I thought the range would be around $22.00. Anyone know what prices Borsalinos sold for back in 1963? Amazing.

Great looking hat. I love the heathered felt. I don’t know enough about dating Borsalinos to opine, but I too wonder at the date.

The brim edge is known as a Cavanagh Edge, but there were several other names for similar edges made by most of the hat makers back in the day. Mode, Guild, Custom Edge, etc. we’re all names this edge treatment has gone by. We often just refer to it as a “felted edge” as a generic and to distinguish it from the overwelt and underwelt edges.

I just saw that you’re using Tapatalk! The Lounge discontinued that a couple of years ago…it must be back up? Maybe a bartender can enlighten us.

What is Tapatalk? I quoted an earlier with photos for context to ask the question did a Boraslino actually cost $59.00 in 1963? Should I not have used those photos from another? Thanks.

I think you just spilt the old post and the old Tapatalk tag just went to the bottom of your new post. You did nothing wrong.

Tapatalk was an app that allowed us to navigate certain websites like this one. It was very easy to use and even easier to post photos from. It wasn’t completely compatible with this site and there were some privacy issues so TFL administrators deactivated Tapatalk access. It really was a great app and made navigating this site much more pleasurable.

Some in Japan have been buying up hats (especially vintage) and reselling. They have tremendous markups on prices. I wonder if any sell at those prices?
Me too  Many of these Borsalinos are normal and commonly found on the Italian or European market, others are slightly more significant, but nothing special. Some, in the end, seem to me to be assemblies, or more hats combined in one, but that's just an opinion:)

I can now say I'm a proud owner of a Borsalino hat. Fished out of the Bay of E, the seller listed it as a 1980s model:

Os3E01f.jpg

Very dark brown with a crown "ribbon" with a coarse weave and multiple colors giving the appearance of "wear and tear" without being torn. The brim is 1-3/4" wide, and I'd guess this hat was worn with the front of the brim snapped down a lot because the flange in front is shallower than in the back. The sweatband could probably use a little moisturizing, and it came without a liner. It was creased backwards, so I corrected that and gave it a Teardrop crease:

zJEzwGS.jpg

The next image is three photos, one a close-up of the "ribbon" showing it's coarse weave and multiple colors, a shot of the very worn and difficult to read logo on the sweatband, and the paper label under the sweatband with my notations of the markings:

pbtggzD.png

Except for recognizing the name I know very little about Borsalino hats so I'd be interested in any information any of you might have to offer. Or not. This hat became a favorite the moment I saw it in-person, and the felt is in remarkably good condition; I'm very pleased that it actually fits my head! :D
You pull off the style like nobody's business! Remember, there's no going back now!

Congrats on the hats. Good looking hats both. The dating of the labels is far from an exact science, but it's the best we've got so far from the hats that do have dates on them, which is a rarity. I've looked at the labels we call the cerrated roll labels again and adjusted the time-period somewhat, because a more recent example showed up last week. Here they all are:

From 1960 until 1972 based on these examples. There may be differing opinions and views, but this is what can be backed up with documentation/photos.

Great documentation as usual, Stefan.

It's not the season to be jealous, but secretly I still am a bit. Wonderful hat, Alan. Merry christmas.

Thank you, Steve. I found it to be useful to save the pics of the ones that give us that bit of extra information.
