Promised to post this one yesterday, so here it is. Borsalino Misto in topo colour. Size 7 1/8 (made for the American market) but it fits me near enough. Model is called Landasti. It had a few spots when I bought it on the bay, which is probably why i got it cheap. Fantastic soft and light heather felt. The hat weighs only 80 grams. Brim 5,7cm and crown 11 cm at the pinch. Quite an early one; my guess is thirties.

A fabulous hat! What leads you to think it is pre-war? My heart would love that to be true, but my brain remains cautious... ;^)

I finally got around to cleaning and shaping this rust colored Pesca. Had a hard time getting the dent centered. Then realized the sweatband was not centered. Adjusted for that but it still didn't look right. Finally figured out the brim on the right side was 1/8" wider than on the left. After a bit of playing I was able to come up with this which I believe is pretty good.

I am just crazy about this color!

This one turned out quite nice. It looks better all Euopeanized with a classic crease. What did you use to get the stains out?

Mike, thanks. I'm still trying to figure out which crease suits it best to be honest. It seems to like the "chicken foot" kind of crease (I believe that I've read it was called). I gave water with a little dishwashing soap a try and it worked out remarkably well on the stains!

Thanks, Alan. There are a number of features which make me think it's pre-war. The label is pre 1955 and it has the size written on it with a fountain pen (not something I'd expect on a later hat). The cloth crown patch is not something I have seen on many later hats (although they do occur on lightweight hats), but the oilskin covered crown patches are more common with the later hats. The shape of the hat is uncommon too for a later hat. Then there's the kind of leather on the sweatband, which I have not seen on later hats and the size tag is very different from the red and white rounded one we see on hats from the fifties and sixties. All in all several clues that make me think it's pre-war. But there's always doubt and I can't positively prove it's pre-war of course.

Great comments. I wish we had better insights into the relationship between Borsalino and the American market in the 1930s and 1940s. Alan, thank you. It would be nice to find some older borsalino hats with dates on them, but untill then it will be (hopefully) educated guesswork for all of us. All we can do is add more hats to the collection in the name of science

Echter Borsalino, Point 5, Crown Open 5 1/2 inches, Brim 2 inches, probably late 1930s and made for the German market. The felt is medium weight and very pliable. There is a wind cord which is uniquely wrapped (see photo) with contrasting band and binding. There is a separate paper size stamp and the main paper label has "Amiata, C. Nera, Gorasgu". The hat is in mint condition and was sold by Ferdinand, Klan Hof i / B. (Bavaria).

The hand written size is usually associated with old Borsalinos. I have a few Echter Borsalinos examples on my site like this one that is dated 17.5.29. You can see the dimensions and format are different.

I am fairly certain the Echter Borsalino I just posted above is WWII era and it has the separate size stamp. I have some other Echter Borsalinos with the seperate size stamps and one belonged to a lady's father that died in 1948 and was purchased prior WWII. By the way this hat has a very similar sweatband to the Zlateff you just posted.

Here is an Echter Borsalino that belongs to Manfred that is missing the separate size stamp (you can see where it fell off). This hat is date stamped 10.9.38.

I have a black Zlateff that has a similar form to one that you posted and it has the separate paper size stamp. When I have time I will post the details. Also it should be possible to find out what happened with Zlateff post WWII.

Thank you buddy. But finding one and being able to afford one doesn't go hand in hand for me. Some medical ailments and the bills that go with them have kept me sidelined for a while. So, I just have to add it to my unreachable wish list.
