That's a great artifact. I wonder if there is/was more postage on it. 70 Lira in 1966 would have been about 11 cents. Looks like the hat made it in good shape too. At least the box did.

It has this other stamps in the bottom: Looks like it arrived to the USA through Chicago and then headed to Portland. You're right, judging by the shape of the box, the hat must have made it in good shape.

On the the other hand, there must be people out there who have the hat but not the box.
I recall being really pleased to find a Stratoliner box, this is perfect for someone on the Borso Box Hunt (BBH)

Agree. $34 isn't bad at all, specially with all that touring history stamps.

Here is a tri of Vintage 1950s Borsalinos that I just came into suddenly and like very much, might actually keep around for a while,
the Hburg I just got from Rodkins and the other 2 off the bay. The brown one is a feather wt and a little low in the crown for my taste so
I may let that one go. The avorio grey one was really an unexpected find as Ive been looking for one like that for a long time. Having
both the Hburg and the Avorio resized with stock Borsalino sweats at Henry the Hatter.

How far downhill has Borsalino's felt quality gone as of late? They really have superior creases and all (of all my hats, custom and otherwise, my Borsalinos have the nicest crease), but I'm wondering if the price can be justified somehow.

You shouldn't buy a hat for it's crease. You can pretty much replicate any with a little patience, time and steam.

A little harder (if not impossible) in the case of straw hats, no? But yeah I get what you're saying, I mean Borsalino hats are relatively... unique, insofar as they're rather distinctive. However, the price is rather steep for a non-custom hat.

I have a couple of open-crowned (well not any more) Alessandrias from Bencraft and I think they're fine hats. While perhaps not the same sort of felt of old, they are certainly not crap and Bencraft has a good price.

Relatively thick and soft with felted edge... reminiscent of Knox 20 but with better crease retention. 2 3/4" brim, 1 7/8" ribbon, 5 1/2" crown. Not much taper to the block.

Nice one, Alan. Ghiaccio is ice in Italian (I'm sure you knew that) it certainly looks to be a cool share of gray. No pun intended.

On second thought, let's take a trip together and ask her in person. :)

Wouldn't that be great? my nonnina would love to feed you with her food and I'd take you to a couple of vintage joints for hat hunting. And to see Leonardo's Last Supper mural, too.

The model name is beyond my Italian though...

Yeah, they come up with some weird sounding names, don't they? Anyone know if they actually have a meaning, or are they simply chosen out of nowhere? I've got an Ecosan, an Idorsca, a Faunosca, a Gaunczca (?) and a TA/Ludora. Hmmm.....
