Near Kingwood, West Virginia.

The billboards, designed by the Campbell-Ewald Company, numbered 45,000 nationwide and were placed in every city with a population of over 2,500, reaching an estimated 65 million Americans daily

If you grew up in Texas, Butterkrust bread surely made it into your kitchen and childhood memories.

Rotating slices and the aroma of the factory freshly baked bread in the morning.

Those National Association of Manufacturers billboards were part of an elaborate propaganda campaign to cover up unsold ad space during the Depression. They were widely ridiculed at the time.

When the Soviet humorists Ilf and Petrov drove cross-country across the US in 1935-36, one of the things they couldn't get over was the billboards -- and the promise of instant gratification thru consumption that they offered. They found the relentless Coca-Cola advertising to be particularly risible -- especially after they sampled the product and found to be not the least bit rest-inducing.

My dear Lizzie, notice the billboard to the left of Coca-Cola.

I’m sure if you or I had been there, we would've treated them to a plate of
delicious Mueller’s spaghetti to enjoy their Cokes! ;)

Not that I think utility rates are too low by any means, but I have observed that folks who complain the loudest about the cost don't seem to have the same issues with their cell phone or cable television bills. People are funny.

Where I live now it gets RFH in the summer and RFC in the winter. If it were just me, I’d live with it being a few degrees warmer inside in the summer and a few degrees cooler in the winter. But the dewy-eyed bride gets to grumbling it it varies more than a couple of degrees from 72 Fahrenheit. So our energy bills are probably 150 percent or more of what they would be if I had my way. Small price to pay, though, for domestic tranquillity.
