Well, as some of you already know, I am taking the entrance exam for the FDNY in January. Well I have decided whether I get the job or not I am going to take the plunge and move to the urban jungle of New York City. Hopefully by mid next year I will be on my way. I am looking for any advice that will be helpful from anyone.

I have yet to reside in NY, but I can extend my best wishes to you, hope you can find a decent place that is not going to cut into your money too much, and good luck with your career, too!

Sounds exciting, and good luck getting a spot in the Fire Department!

Seems it was a very Golden Era thing to move to the big city to find a job. I'm having the opposite dilemma these days.

Good luck to you!

I moved to the smoke from a rural area when i was 19, (although i had lived in London as a child). It was a big step for me too, not knowing a soul and starting a job in a big ad agency. My mum gave me one piece of advice, which is common sense really. She said just to find a local place, a bar or restaurant, (in my case it was the local fish and chip shop). I used to pop in for supper once a week at least or stick my head round the door for a drink or what have you and soon became a regular. I was lucky they were Italian like myself, so they took me under their wing. It was nice to have a place to go initially where the people were friendly, especially as it can be daunting and a bit lonesome when you don't know many people.

I moved here from Oklahoma in 1982, so I know something of what you're going through. If you have any specific questions I can answer, feel free to ask.
