Since we are on this stint of best of/worst of, I thought Id add a category.

What are some movies you have seen that you thought were some of the most intriguing, well crafted pieces of cinema you have ever seen, but dont know a soul who has seen them?

I constantly think about the film The United States of Leland, and can find no one who has seen it. Major stars, fantastic acting, complex story. No one I know has seen it.

I hope this thread will produce stuff we can all add to our Netflix cue

Some Unknowns and Some Known By Very Few

The Gristle (2001)... one of the funniest movies ive ever seen.

Capone (1976) a cool take of the mobster and Stallone is in it before his Rocky days.

Zombie (1979) aka Zombi 2 in europe, a coool and very graphic horror movie.

The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) a "what if" kind of story about Jesus.

The Krays (1990) a very good film on the british mobsters and "the Firm".

The Falcon and The Snowman (1985) a movie about accused russian spies Christopher Boyce and Daulton Lee.

Bad Boys (1983) a film about juvenile delinquents in a youth detention center.

Gladiator (1992) a movie about underground boxing.

El Mariachi (1992) Robert Rodriguez first film about the Mariachi character.

U Turn (1997) Oliver Stone at his funniest.. a movie about a drifter who just isnt having a good day..

Wonderland (2003) the story of porn star John Holmes and his involvent in the 1981 "Four on the Floor" murders aka the Wonderland Murders.

The Decline of Western Civilization II : The Metal Years (1988).. A documentary on heavy metal of the mid to late 80s and its philosophy from musicians and fans.

Theres so many more i have to list but heres just a few.

Three leap to mind. "The Tao of Steve" is a fascinating, independently made character study. I've seen it only one time, very late at night. When I went to bed, I had a feeling of well-being that was attributable to the motion picture.

The second is a droll comedy that was panned by the critics, "The Last Time I Saw Archie" was written by William Bowers about his time in the US Army just before D-Day. The protagonist, Archie Hall, sued Bowers and the production company for libel. I believe he won.

The last is another droll comedy-adventure that was panned by critics, "Jake Speed." Jake Speed is Mr. Everyman as super hero -- who earns his living by creating paperback novels from his exploits à la Doc Savage and Matt Helm. When Speed is asked by the heroine when he and his partner met, Speed replies, "Volume One."

I have watched that movie. It use to scare me when I was little but I like it now.

Stage Door 1937, I had never heard of this movie until it appeared on TCM. I loved this movie and what a phenomenal cast!

The writing in the movie is great and the banter between the girls in this movie is very entertaining.

I'm big on pleasant entertainment, preferrably with story lines that require a modicum of thought. Another essentially unknown motion picture of this ilk is "The Rounders," with Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda as itinerant modern-day cowboys in Sedona, Arizona. This droll, tongue-in-cheek character study is replete with a host of wonderful character actors doing their thing with juicy parts.

Oh man..Way of the Gun! I LOVE that movie. One of the best opening scenes EVER!

I love Once Upon A Time In America (filmed in 1981 but released in 1984).I wanted to list it on my list but i thought it might be known by alot of people and thats why i didnt. Thats one of the best mob movies ever made.. and focuses on the jewish mob instead of the mostly used italian.


I saw Kama Sutra: Tale of Love years ago once on cable but dont remember it much. I also like Repo Man (1984).. a punk rock scifi movie, with Iggy Pop doing the title track. I love the lyrics where he says "I was a teenage dinosaur, stoned and obsolete...I didnt get ****ed and I didnt get kissed I got so ****ing dense"
