My choice would be Montecristi Hat Works in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

If you have never been to Santa Fe, it is one of the loveliest destinations in America and you can also go home with a wonderful hat...at least having ordered a wonderful hat! Finish your wardrobe with a belt from James Reid...

...another of my destinations when in Sants Fe.

Working or just for show?

If you're just looking for something that "looks authentic," there are many places like Knudsen's that offer Old West and Buckaroo style hats. If you need a good working cowboy hat that's well made and uses high grade materials, I've had good luck with Mackey Custom Hats. Mine is about 8 years old now and still going strong, looks like new. Tonto Rim Trading is also a good place for lots of styles and choices. Thanks, Frank

I'd most likely go with Tom Hirt. Fantastic work there. If he has the block he can make anything you want.

There are lots of choices in western hat makers. The choice might be narrowed if we knew what you want and expect in your hat. Are you after a vintage look or a contemporary western hat? Are you going for a hat to wear with period clothing to be a period authentic hat or are you going to dress in Wranglers/shirt/boots and want a cowboy as worn today by those who ride/train/show horses or compete in rodeos?

I will be the levis/shirt/boot guy. But am mostly interested in the historical western styles (.i.e. Boss of the plains, Tom Horn, etc.) As far as expectations for the hat, not 100% Beaver, maybe 50% to hold up to some weather and last a while.

I do notice that there are some hat makers that seem to sell wool hats for the same price as a good fur felt hat. I would like to buy a well made hat at a reasonable price 300 - 400 dollars. Thanx:)

Jimmy's been a custom hatter for several decades, beginning when his rodeo career ended. Very pleasant man. And you've seen his hats worn by people in news - presidents of the US, et al. . . . One last thing, he will make fedoras to order; it's not something for which there is much demand in western Montana.
