This is my house. I actually like the awnings. A month ago they had about a foot and half of snow on them. I had to knock it off with a pole. I was scared of the weight it was putting on them.

I have the fabric type but it makes a huge difference sitting on the front porch in the summertime sipping a lemonade and listening to big band music and not sweating to death from the sun.

Canvas awnings are great for keeping out the summer heat. Not uncommon on pre 1980's homes down under, but have fallen out of style since.

I think they have fallen out of style because of the cost .
I have them all around my front porch that is huge and two on the west facing upstairs rooms .
I got a quote for the other 17 windows in my house and to build the metal frame's, sew the actual awning and then install the house hardware to mount the awnings it will cost me around 3 grand.

Not only that but for example in my part of the country they will be up from mid May to the end of Oct. at the latest and they are a b*&%h to put up and take down plus you have to have room to store them .
That being said though they make my front porch so much cooler than having the afternoon western sun beaming in the porch and they keep the rooms that have them way cooler .

Nothing like sitting on that porch in the summertime with a cold lemonade and listening to big band music!

Not quite the same - the type commonly used here:

http://www.shadewell.com.au/outdoor-blinds-awnings/drop-arm-awnings-Melbourne

Probably known by another name in the US. These stay attached all year and just take a few moments to retract.

Yes your right close but not quite the same as mine .
I wish I could leave mine up all year ,but between the elements and the heavy snow load they will get in the winter they would not make it past one season!

FF, that house looks wonderful with the awnings. There' something very "jolly" about them, as the British would say.

While attending a conference in Seville, Spain a few years back, I was really charmed by the canvas awnings that spanned some of the streets. Not only do they provide much-needed shade but also a beautiful, golden light for the strollers.

Hello Fedora Loungers , this is the end product when you have nice awnnings to sheild a space from the Summer sun.
We love to hang out here in the evenings ,have people over and enjoy each others company ,something that should be done more often I.M.H.O.

The porch is qiute large and we have a blast out here.

Looking in the other direction.

Happy Buddha with soothing sounds.

I've been thinking of putting awnings on my house and would REALLY like a big metal one for over the front stoop, which is about 6x10, I'd guess. I thought it would be a thrifty way around actually building a front porch on this house (I'm assuming it had one at one point or another in its lifetime.) However, I cannot seem to find anyplace to get a ballpark price on one. The search continues.

If that fails, I'm planning on putting a retractable canvas one, and a deck rail around the stoop.

My neighbor has a retractile canvas awning. the biggest problem is, when the canvas is off, in early spring, the birds take it as an invitation to set up house on top of the drum mechanism!

Oh, boy. I didn't even think of that. I know with the sunsetter awnings, you don't even take off the canvas, you just retract it and it's good until spring.

Call Wrisco, and ask them who their local distributor is in your area. I have installed some of their units. They make nice products.

Frank, they are still on the back-burner, though definitely something I want to do. If I can't get to it this summer, there's always the next one, right?

Tom just wondering how you made out with awnings .
I know you are redoing the house and awnings are most likely not at the top of the list ?
