Jesse was here
Jesse James stopped over in Bourbon Co. Ky on one of his raids. A resident, in her nineties (has recently passed) remembers when he came to her father's door and asked if he could camp by the creek near the house. Her father said "Ok"
James said, "I want you and your family to stay inside until morning and we will be gone. We mean you no harm."
The lady reported that they stayed as asked and her father told them that Jesse didn't want to take any chance that a family member would go for the sheriff.
The next morning they were gone as promised.
I have visited the area and it is still quite rural and off the beaten path.
I haven't seen the latest movie but most of the movies made on the James gang often portray him as heroic and a member of the "rob the rich and give to the poor" club. Of course he subscribed to the first part of the adage. He often neglected any thought given to the second half. He and his gang were a pretty selfish bunch.
