The Antipodean thread

To be honest I think we should be celebrating Federation which was January 1st, not invasion day, I can see how Traditional Owners( Aboriginal Black people) get upset, sort of rubbing it in their faces, it would be a bit like UK larger louts celebrating VE day in Berlin, bound to incite a bit of Biff

I actually tend to agree with you on this. Australia Day doesn't mean much to me, and having worked in Aboriginal Ed for a long time in the 1990s, I had many indigenous friends who did think Australian Day was a slap in the face, and I was sympathetic to that.

The problem is that I see Australia Day turning into the hoofluff that Waitangi Day is in NZ.

Making it a celebration of the federation is a fantastic idea and one which is a little less controversial. After all the idea of a national day is to celebrate being one and togetherness.

Just the opinion of an expat Kiwi now in Oz who has witnessed the degeneration of the national day back home.

Cheers and I hope everyone had a good one on Thursday.

Hi Simone!

Joys of an 8 month old daughter ;) Keeps me out of mischief.

Hope all's well over your way and Ben is well. That DVD you sent me still gets a workout once a month or so!

This may be of some interest, or not, for some of the local lasses

At Bendigo Art Gallery

GRACE KELLY: STYLE ICON
11 MARCH 2012 - 17 JUNE 2012

"Grace Kelly: Style Icon will highlight the spectacular wardrobe of Grace Kelly and examine her glamorous Hollywood image and enduring appeal. The exhibition features dresses from such films as High Society as well as the gown she wore to accept her Oscar in 1955"

I feel a road trip coming on!

That doesn't sound bad at all.

I'd also love to toddle up to Sydney for the Picasso exhibition.

Thought I would introduce myself in this thread after MikeBravo linked to it.

Hi all :)

I live in Melbourne suburbs with my little ones (though they really are not so little any more). While I have been a lover of fashion, music and movies (mainly musicals) from the 40s and 50s from a young age (thanks to my grandma) its only in the last few years I have started to come to the realisation I could wear something other than jeans and a t-shirt. I haven't worn pants in about 18 months now. I would love to meet up with some people who are interested in similar things. I used to be a career woman and got out a lot....but a few years ago my daughters were having trouble at school so I pulled them out (we now homeschool) and gave up working to be with them...which is awesome, but it can get a little lonely.

Would love to see the Grace Kelly exhibition - but don't drive so as long as I can get there on the train I would be happy to join you.

I am also taking my two elder girls to sydney in two weeks (just over night) to see the Harry Potter Exhibit and while we are there we are also going to see Picasso (I am more excited about that one).

Sounds lovely, but alas one doesn't drive, well of course there is always public transport, how much would a Taxi fare from Potts Point to the Blue Mountains be, I ask myself ?, from memory, my last box of Chocolates from the Paragon ended up in a Trifle!

You can watch it right now on iview not sure if it will work for those Outside Australia, but what a treat for we lucky Antipods! Tammy Macintosh (below) used to be a Teller in my local bank when she was about 19, she was always such fun whenever I went in to pay my Mortgage

Had to go out, Tivo'd it though. Already have excited emails saying how good it was from a vintage friend. Going to watch it in a few minutes.

Agreed, I just finished watching it, superb production. Radically different to the book mind you, but I've no problem with that.
