Well, I've been prying into this hat for a while after seeing the "Travelling Hat" threads, and I think this particular lid has alot of potential.

From what I can gather, it's got a wide snap brim, and a tall, untapered crown. A good choice for the 1930's stereotype hat, methinks.

Anyone here own one of these? Thoughts/opinions?

And pictures! If anyone has pictures of their sqautters, please post them!!!

3" was a skosh too wide for the 30s urbanite I'd think - suit shoulders were padded but still narrow. But for backcountry wear it would be just the thing. And the crown looks very appropriate for either style.

David Morgan sells them open crowned in 3 colors for $104. Yay for the self colored band!

I have had one for about 2 years and find it to be a very well made comforatble hat. The brim is a little wide for me so I wear it less than my other hats but it is a nice hat that you described quite well. I don't have photos but davidmorgan.com does.

I tried on both the Squatter and the Sydney at David Morgan's last Saturday. While I was driving up, I was sure I'd get the Squatter because I've been contemplating this purchase for weeks. But as I said at the store, while the brim size is only slightly different, on my head, I didn't like the Squatter at all. My exact quote was, "Good grief - it makes my head look like Saturn!" The Squatter was also very stiff compared to the Sydney. The brown the Squatter came in was a little too red for my taste as well. The medium brown that the Sydney came in (Fawn) just looked absolutely perfect once I had it on. In fact, that was the first thing I noticed when I saw the hats on the shelf - loved that color.

And since David Morgan is a charter advertiser in Classic Style, make sure to mention that when you call or order.

I have one Squatter. It is a great color and it has become very soft. The 3' brim is a bit too wide for me but it is a well made hat non the less. It did taper a bit after some repeated showers but its very comfortable.

I've got a Black Squatter on the way from David Morgan, and a Bushman, too (got my fingers crossed that I'll like the Bushman). Should be here on the 4th. I don't have a camera, but I'll write a little review when I get it. It was the picture of Douglas in his (right above me) that made me want one in the first place, when he originally posted it.

I know it! Everything the guy puts on his head becomes a Grade A Fedora. It doesn't have to be felt or even have a brim to start with. His head, like a Haberdasher, works away to make a perfect fedora out of the materials at hand. :D

nearly...

Is there anything similar to the Squatter on the market, but with a shorter brim? A larger ribbon wouldn't hurt either. It really looks excellent otherwise, and is more palatable to my budget than a custom-made hat. Only, the brim's just too large for me (7-3/8-ish) and my taste ('37). [huh]

BTW, with hats like that, is it really 3'', whether it's a 6-3/4 size hat or a 7-7/8?

Hey Douglas,

When you first received the hat, did it have any taper?

Thanks for the input, guys. I really am liking this hat. I think maybe I'll just buckle down and deal wirth the 3 inch brim...after wearing a 3 in. crushable outbackm I might not look that bad in it.

When I first recieved it, it was open crowned and had no taper. Putting a center crease in it adds to the tapered effect and I wore in the rain many times and still do. It slowly began to taper in. Still it is a fun and usefull hat. I am not fond of the 3" brim but it definitely shades your face from the sun. For me it is a very well made well styled funtional lid.

Rezzing a slightly older thread here...

Douglas, the hat you pictured; what stock color is it? Deep Fawn?

i almost bought this hat on the internet unable to try it on. trying to find one as close as Depps. but that's what i was afraid of, the brim being way to big and looking funny on me..

still might get it cause the price is great. and it looks well made..

Jerekson, It may be Deep Fawn. It is definitely green on the moss side.

Ok, Here it is. I consider this pretty much a country hat since it has a 3" brim. It was mashed in a common front pinch in typical fedora style when I got it. I wore it that way for a while and it just didn't look right. I gave it a cattleman's bash and like it alot better now. This one is in brown.

wanted to revive this thread again. and there's a reason for it. If you search thefedoralounge.com for "squatter" via google, you get to this thread. And since I was interested in an akubra squatter in moonstone, this thread, especially rooster's pictures, pretty much helped me.

To the story:Ordered it at davidmorgan.com 5 days later it arrived (I'm living in Germany(!) and I instantly began to LOVE this hat:

that's how I got it (sorry for quality, just my mobile phone):

Looks fantastic Adrian, the bash suits you very well. I also searched through the Squatter threads and enjoyed Rooster's and Fatdutchman's posts and photos of this hat. The first, or second hat I purchased was this Squatter I found on e-bay.
