I took some self-portraits this morning. I'm considering sending this one to hatsdirect.com. It's not too bad though I wish the suit fit better.

Thank you sir.

[series of unsolicited anecdotes]
I had errands to run downtown, including a visit to my lawyer (who used to wear a fedora but gave it up when it was stolen) and got a, "You look spiffy!" from a lady who was about my age as I crossed the street.

Once across the street, I hit the two western wear shops on the square. The first was a downscale establishment staffed by an old cowpoke who was friendly in that I-don't-know-you-don't-want-to-know-you kind of way. He didn't stock what I was looking for and didn't know when he would do so.

The other was staffed by a really friendly, older husband and wife. She waited on me and not only sold me the orange hat sponge I wanted but gave me a deal on a nice hat brush. She mentioned that I looked like a lawyer. I disabused her of that notion and her husband had some not so nice things to say about lawyers in a jocular sort of spirit. We exchanged off-color lawyer jokes and I was on my way. It was a grand time.

I should also mention that some of my errands were in the courthouse. I was, no doubt, mistaken for a lawyer there.
[/anecdotes]

Thanks again. :)

I bet they would really appreciate that pic!

If it's good enough for you then it must be good enough for them. But the more I look at that suit the more concern I have over the fit. I think it's a little generous in the waist.

The Federations are great fedoras.
Did you give your a c-crown crease?

No, it's still in a diamond bash.

I'm having issues with the "C" crown. Can you tip a fellow American to a tutorial on technique?

I'd really appreciate it.

Very nice fedora/suit combo!:eusa_clap

And thank you sir. I honestly believe I can wear this hat with pretty much anything I own except the seersucker.

Of course, I've got an eye on several nice fedoras that would look much better with say, blue stripe suit and brown leather.

More as it develops.

Ugarte, You, sir, have "got it together." A good looking hat is one thing, but a suit and hat that go together like that, will always make an outstanding impression. :eusa_clap :eusa_clap :eusa_clap :eusa_clap

One word: braces!

I have braces, but the pants are fine. It's the jacket that's cut full.

Makes me look fat doesn't it? Go on, say it.

The hat really makes the suit!

I am terribly, terribly happy with this hat.

I think I shall purchase another. I'm off to the auctions!

Re: the jacket

If the shoulders fit then a good tailor can slim it down for you without too much trouble and too much cost. if the shoulders are too big, eh....... it may not be worth a suit re-cut, THAT's expensive!

Thanks flylot, but the shoulders are good. My sense is the darts need to be taken in gently in the waist.

Unfortunately, there are no "tailors" around here. I can get some alterations done nearby though. I don't know. I'm going to wait and see.

Interestingly, I do have a navy Armani sportscoat that fits me in the shoulders, but is about two sizes too small in the waist. Shame too. It's really nice.

Sharp hat - any chance of a photo of the diamond? I'm planning one of these myself. If Santa doesn't take that option from my suggestions list, I'll be buying one in the new year, and a diamond is exactly what I have planned for it.

Take their advice - check into getting the alterations done...and the other coat you mentioned may be able to be altered as well. No sense in letting one hang in the closet that you could be wearing, or wearing one that's not hanging correctly, IMHO.

Ugarte,
To do a C-crown, I usually hold the inside of the steamed crown with my left hand inside the crown, fingers spread to provide as equal support to the rear 2/3rds of the hat as possible.
Then with my free hand, I begin a gentle pinching action along the edge of the 2/3rds of the hat, starting at the back and working both sides by alternating the the gentle pinch, working one side then the other to the point where iIve shaped an edge 2/3rds of the way around the hat.
I let it cool.
Then I give it a quick shot of steam in the center of the crown and a gentle "bump" to create a dome in the center of the crown.
I let it cool.
Then some steam to the front of the crown, the 1/3rd you have left and give it the degree of pinch I desire, and for me, that would be tight.
I repeat this process as much as necessary or until I'm happy with what I've done. Looks something like this, and honestly, some call it a 'teardrop' crease. There might be a difference, but I think it's a very fine distinction.
