Vintage t shirts are RARE!!! Most were worn to death, so surviving specimens are highly collectible. Having said that, I really don't see what's so great about this one. It's not like it has airbrushed divers fighting an octopus or anything.

Rarity does not always the mean commanding a high price. There are tons of antique and vintage fountain pens that were made by small manufacturer's that are rare, in fact obscure also, but they don't fetch this type of pricing.

Now if it had been worn by some one famous also, then maybe.

That does seem like a lotta money- it's not such an old or desirable example-

It DOES seem excessive, but the demand for vintage sports tees and sweats is at an all time high. The Japanese are already reproducing vintage Champion styles, so we know it's desirable. That particular label might be a rare one as well.
Still, I couldn't image anyone is actually gonna WEAR a $500 Tee!

Is it just me or is that an actual team uniform and not a piece of team merchandise? If that's the case I guess 500 seems less astronomical.

As to why someone would be so into the SFSU football team I have no idea (if you're from the SF Bay Area you'll get probably get that joke).

It may not be a true football or team jersey but an athletics (gym) shirt of the time. I seem to recall that at many colleges if you took any gym classes you were required to get the gym uniforn, and often these were numbered and that number became your number for that class. Shirt, shorts and sweats made up a complete uniform, all numbered as a set, it might be one of those.
