Received my olive roadhouse this afternoon which both sleeves are shortened 2 inches by Alan at Johnson leather, I can't express how satisfied I am.

Upon inspect the pieces Alan send to me, I found there is a white stuff has been glue together in the middle of the leather, it is exactly same like the sample of Langlitz heavyweight black cow leather.
I hope somebody can tell me the purpose to doing that, of course I am very disappointed to find out this, hopefully it is not what I think it is.

HH, the updated understanding why this appearance is as such is that the dying process does not penetrate through, so the undyed natural layer can be seen cross-sectionally. The outer side is sprayed & coated, which penetrates even less. Hence you get the stratum appearance

I think it is the original zip with a lock pull on it. I remember something about the pull being mentioned by someone on here when it went up for sale. The jacket looks like a good fit HH.

I was talking about hide with my friend at his leather and silver workshop yesterday. I was taught
1) The top with the tightest collagen bundle is the toughest and most expensive part so it makes no sense for someone to glue a real top to an artificial bottom layer. So the cheap leather are made by adding an artificial top (with fake grains) to the split hide (the bottom layer with loose collagen bundle).

2) a simple test to see if the hide is top grain is to fold them and see if the grain/pore expands. If they don't the grain/pore is man-made i.e. an artificial top. The difficulty lies in telling the difference between a) corrected grain which is also top grain but with a corrected (machine pressed) top and b) split hide with an artificial top. If the grain/pore does not expand then the next step may have to be to split the leather.

That however is only for info. I don't see how LW would use split hide given that split hide does not last and does split sideways easily with a little stretching and folding.

Well done Hh. The fit is vastly improved and the sleeves look spot on now. This is why I implicitly trust Alan and JL and the work they do. I can’t wait to get my cal back. I’m not keen on another custom jacket, given my sordid history. But every time I start to creep back in that direction...I think about how much I’d like another crack at JL.

Incredibly cool-looking jacket. Three cheers for having the guts to try something a bit different.
