Until about 50 years ago, leather jackets were just not commonly sold or bought by the average person. Leather jackets were a specialty item.

The smaller shops were very focused on Police and motorcycle jackets. Larger makers like, California Sportswear, Block, Monarch made all manner of leather outerwear for casual or fashion wear. This trend began in earnest in the mid 30s with introduction of the zipper.

Taubers catalog was probably pretty small during the 40s and into the 50s, focused on Police and motorcycle jackets. To remain relevant they began producing more Civilian jackets, like some pictured above in the 60s.

Here is another early Taubers. The popular Military A2 look for the Civilian population..

I posted my recent Utility A2, very similar but this one does not appear to have handwarmer pockets while mine does. This one is from the 40s too. Odd label placement

The corduroy lining in that late 60s-70 cafe racer is so cool!

Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge with us Terry:)

I sold that due to size, but it was a most impressive jacket. Never seen one like it.

From the pics, the only tag on the jacket is the 'Taubers of California' shown; the seller does not mention the leather type in the description.

There's a few more pictures, maybe you can guess the leather from them. Unfortunately, I am not experienced enough to tell horse from steer just by looking at images.

My opinion is that, being the jacket from the 60s, it's more likely to be steer than horse.

This label is 60s and Taubers did use horsehide into the 60s. Leather tags are hit and miss with this label. It is earlier than mine orange label jacket below. This older one has more of a stiff horsehide look?
