I didnt know before I got them that strangers would come up and touch my arm. One man pinched my arm and then proceeded to ask me if they were real...

How rude?! ANd, why in the world would someone get an arm full of faked tattoos???

But I have one little tat on my wrist and many people (but people I knew, no strangers) tried to rub it off or/and asked if it was real. (the motive is pretty simple)

Poem by Ted Kooser

Tattoo
What once was meant to be a statement—
a dripping dagger held in the fist
of a shuddering heart—is now just a bruise
on a bony old shoulder, the spot
where vanity once punched him hard
and the ache lingered on. He looks like
someone you had to reckon with,
strong as a stallion, fast and ornery,
but on this chilly morning, as he walks
between the tables at a yard sale
with the sleeves of his tight black T-shirt
rolled up to show us who he was,
he is only another old man, picking up
broken tools and putting them back,
his heart gone soft and blue with stories.

Me & My brother were talking to each other
'bout what makes a man a man
is it brains or brawn or the month you were born?
we just didn't understand

Our old man didn't like our appearance - he said that only women wear long hair....

so me and my brother borrowed money from mother
we knew what we had to do
we went downstairs, past the barber and gymnasium
and got our arms tattooed

Welcome to my life, tattoo!
I'm a man now thanks to you!
I expect I'll regret you, but the skin graft man won't get you
You'll be there till I die

my dad beat me cause mine said 'mother'
but my mother naturally liked it, and beat my brother
'cause his tattoo was of a lady in the nude
and she thought that was extremely rude

Welcome to my life, tattoo!
We've a long time together, me and you!
I expect I'll regret you, but the skin graft man won't get you
You'll be there till I die

now I'm older, I'm tattooed all over
my wife is tattooed too
ah-root-tee-toot-too
roo-tee-toot-tee-toot-toot
root-tee-toot-tee-toot- tattoo-too

to - you!

It's a song on this album by the Who.

Imho, an album everyone will love - tons of beautiful songs, funny lyrics, old time radio ad parodies and the usual Who testosterone rock when they were just hitting their peak.

I discovered it rather late and was shocked at how good it was....without question the equal of Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper et al in that era.....I consider it by far the best thing they ever did; it's one of my top 10 desert Island discs for certain.

Just get the CD version which includes lots of extra goodies

"Tattoo" also appears on some live Who bootlegs and it's on the CD re-release of Live at Leeds - maybe my second favorite Who album.

Speaking of the rude people and tattoos... I'm regularly manhandled so folks can get a better look at mine, and sometimes ask if it's real.

I think I've posted it here before, it's a phoenix inside my left forearm. It takes up most of the forearm, so it's pretty noticeable. Usually people think it's a wound of some kind at first, and most won't hesitate to grab my wrist and turn my arm to take a gander at it. Annoying. I guess that's what I get for having public ink.

I can't believe people do that (touching asking if it's real, etc...)

That's a really cool phoenix! Did u come up with the design?

Thanks Josephine!

Pgoat - Yes, I did. Thanks for the compliment! The tattoo artist actually drew it, but I designed the style of flames, wings, parts of the bird, etc. Basically a "bespoke" tattoo. lol

I'm another one who gets random strangers touching my tattoos. I've got paw prints around my wrist, and when I worked in a shop I'd regularly get customers start touching my wrist while I was serving them. It was a little weird. Though I suppose it was better than them trying to touch the tattoo on my chest [huh]

lol Thanks, Mr. Burns (release the hounds!) I'll try to get a better picture some time. This tattoo actually really means a lot to me, I got it at sort of a transitional period in my life, and it symbolizes an important transition I went through.

cool - that's the whole deal right there....not sure why the anti-tattoo folks don't quite 'get' that....

I always get the 'is it real' thing. If someone I didn't know touched me though...well, sailor tattoos = rough bird as we all know

it seems only women are reporting that strangers are being (imo) rude and invasive - perhaps some still find women with skin art a curiosity? Not sure how that could be in 2008.....regardless of how you feel about it, women with tattoos are pretty above radar by now.
