So I am posting this in the general forum beacuse I dont mind feedback from either the wonderful gentlemen or ladies of this forum. If i am in the wrong place please correct me bartenders!!

I am looking for a new tattoo and wonndered if anyone could help me out. I love tattoos and was planning to get out on my foot to cover a scar. Basically I have spent a good proportion of my life struggling with mental illness and having finally found peace I want to get something the symbolise this. I once thought it felt like standing on the edge of some invisible line, with no direction or way to go and feeling somewhat trapped. This is what I want my tattoo in embody. The fact that I feel like I am now going somewhere and being freeded from illness.

What coul I use to symbolise this and does anyone have any idas I could base a tattoo around that has a vintage feel too it?? All I have thought of so far is birds, a compass, feathers etc but I feel these are very common.

Step 1: Find a good shop and artist in Manchester (assuming that's still your location). Many shops have portfolios online so you can look to see who's a good artist that works in a style you like.

Step 2: Tell him/her what you just posted.

I might not be the right one to come up with anything, since I do not like tattoos all that much.
But reading about your reason for doing it, I thought a birds wing on your foot would be right. Just like Hermes or Mercury had winged feet, that could bring them anywhere and fast - so should you.
Good luck!

I'm going to second this. Find an artist you love and have a consultation with them - they'll know what will and won't work for a tattoo, and have great ideas because it's their job.

Edited to include:
Who cares if the theme of birds or a compass has 'been done' before? If you're getting the piece custom drawn instead of pulling flash off the wall, that'll be a step in the right direction to ensure no one else has your exact tattoo.

Hi, nice to see another Lounger from sunny Manchester!

I saw this thread a couple of days ago, but didn't have anything to add as I don't know the first thing about tattoos.

But then yesterday I saw this image in a mag and it reminded me of this thread:

It's (literally) an uplifting image, but would be a good cover up tattoo for a scar.

Honestly, I think it probably defeats the purpose of getting a tattoo to be looking for other people's opinions/suggestions about which tattoo to get.[huh]

If you don't have a good idea what you want, it probably means you aren't ready for one, and the possibility of *indelible* disappointment is very real.

(I speak of one with many tattoos, none of which I am disappointed with.)
