Tailors in Northern California?

From what I've gleaned from other fora(SF, AAAC, LL, FNB) there seems to be a dearth of quality bespoke tailors in NoCal. Wilkes Bashford would be your best bet for quality MTM(Oxxford, Brioni, Kiton, etc..). Oh, and Congratulations!

Thank you for your best wishes Tomasso. I looked at Wilkes Bashford's website and have previously been to their San Francisco store. While there is no denying the quality of their garments, they are more than a bit out of my price range.

I heard of a shop in North Beach called Al's Attire (http://www.alsattire.com/) that is supposed to make suits well. While his site makes no refernces to "Golden Age" style attire, I know that he was quite popular out here in the swing heyday.

Has anyone here made use of or heard stories about his services?

Al's the man to see. Been to his shop, met him through Roberto(who's the man to see for vintage). Can't go wrong with him, seen his work and it was top notch. You'll pay the going rate, but it'll be well worth it.

Thank you very much for the info! If you don't mind the naive question, as I've never had a suit made before, what range does "the going rate" fall into?
I'd hate to go in there and get shell shocked and tounge tied. I would normally PM this type of question, but I'm not yet allowed being a new guy.

You're right there in Alameda so why don't you make a little trip over to San Leandro on Washington Avenue there's a little tailor named Angel. He does really good work. I've never had him make me a total suit, but he does all my alterations. Look up the phone number in the book; L.A. Tailor on Washington Avenue across the street from Pelton Shopping Center. You can even just drop by because he's open 6 days a week.

I agree, Al at Al's Attire is THE MAN. He's going on vacay soon so you should catch him. Details here:

BTW, Al has been keeping the Vintage crowd looking REAL good for years. He's awesome and uses nothing but premium fabric.

On Geary. I have no idea what he charges, but he does very nice work. I had a friend who died about 10 years ago who had quite a few suits made by him. A couple of years before he died, my friend gave me several of his suits (he had wound down his business and didn't need them, and I had just started working in two cities and needed to keep clothes in both). The care and attention to detail looks to me like the best bespoke work.

this thread is exactly why I posted my other thread called "tailor sticky" in suits.

A sticky that will list all the tailors that other FL members recommend.

Roberto is the man for vintage. I buy my ties and miscellanious other things from him. Roberto and Angelo are the guys in the scene to buy vintage.

BTW, I had a GREAT experience at Al's tonight. However, I'm rather tired from my day so I'm going to have to post that tomorrow.

Just call him Al

I was just in Al's attire the other day. Got the card:

http://www.homepage.mac.com/alsattire

The web page doesn't really do justice to what he does- none
of the men's shirts are shown, for example.

I haven't purchased anything there, but I probably will... well
worth a visit. I know people here are interested in 8 piece caps
and the like. He is making those. And don't forget to check out
the collection of vintage hat boxes he has on display. He doesn't
sell felt hats anymore, though.

Okay, I'll bite. Who is Roberto?

Roberto Isola, the vintage man that has a shop in Roseville at the Antique Trove and a HUGE collection in Daly City. I've bought tons of stuff from him.

Let me know if you want his contact info. I have his cell phone.

FG.

Love to hear about it. I'm headed over to Al's this afternoon to talk suits with him. I think I've learned just enough in the forum to not sound like a complete dwiib while talking to him.

BTW-

How was last nights GTG?

Hey,

It was great, I went ahead and posted in the Event forum on that. Tell Al that Jon E. says hello.

Al is the Man

I went to Al's in North Beach yesterday and had a fantastic time. Got measured for my 3-piece, picked the fabrics, buttons etc. He is on top of his game. He knows the craziest little details like how jacket pockets angle differently depending on the year of the decade. Went back in this morning to finish up all the details, I could hang out there all day and just listen to him. Can't wait to see the suit at the first fitting. If the suit is half as good as the experience, it's going to be sweet.

See mate, I told you. He met Magneto and Sefton as well during the GTG. He is at the top of his game and he is awesome. He fitted me too and he's making me a great suit, three piece as well.
