Well I had a few moth issues some weeks back. Nothing major, no write-offs or anything like that, but I did have a sprinkling of tracks on a few of my Akubras I left on the coat rack at the front door over a few nights. The one with the most injury had already been designated a beater.

My temporary solution was to acquire some large size Ziploc bags. They are designed for storage and they fit my hats perfectly. Not sure if anyone else has tried them and there is probably some downside I haven't thought of yet but it was an inexpensive attempt to keep my precious hats safe. Thet also worked great when I placed my hats in the freezer for 72 hours to make sure the hat-munching culprits met a timely end.

My hats now sit in my office on the couch resting on their crowns in their new clear plastic homes.

Any kind of a bag will help to keep hats clean, even a dry cleaner's clear bag, or a supermarket grocery bag. I tend to use the unsealed supermarket bags. Of course here on the High Plains, humidity is seldom a problem, but the dust sure is.

Dust is why I decided to store all my hats in hat boxes, too. That and dog hair from my son's dog while the thing is here.

Just curious, Robert, have you solved this problem? You've got a few hats, so maybe you've come across this problem previously.

I've received a few very old hats with mold/mildew issues sometimes on the sweatband or behind it. Where I am its a problem in the summer but the winter is the opposite(especially with radiators). I sometimes put a newly arrived hat in a bag in the freezer, but not sealed totally airtight and then remove it from the bag when I take it out of the freezer to warm back up. I store some in bags but only with the ends tucked under --not sealed. I also wouldn't bag a hat fresh off one's head-condensation forms on the underside of the crown and the plastic tip cover can be quite wet under some climatic conditions.

Thanks guys! See I knew there was something I wasn't thinking of.:eusa_doh:

All my Ziploc bags are now open 3 or 4 inches to let the hats breathe a bit. I will keep an eye open for the salad bags.
