Sweating

Hey

I decided to go for a walk wearing my fedora. It was my first time in a while wearing it outside. It wasn't so hot out, and there was a light breeze and yet it caused my head and forehead to sweat. I have a gray fur felt fedora, like the kind Bogart wore. Why would this happen, even with a light breeze?

Most of the heat from the human body is lost through the top of the head.
If you cover your head with a non vented hat the heat will build up enough for you to sweat even in moderate temperatures. You'll find many summer felts have vents built into sides , or top, of the crown in order to release the heat from the top of your head. Straw hats are often favored for summer wear for this reason as well.

I normally wear felt hats, even in the summer, unless I am planning on being outside, away from air conditioned spaces, for a prolonged period. Then, of course, it is time for a straw hat.

Yes, sweating is the curse of felt hats in summer. I even tried the ones with the small holes on side, but it was no good at all. What´s worse - the hat starts to slide on my head and tends to fall down in a slightest wind.
Sweated sweatband is what I call a minimum friction material :)

I have a couple of hats with sweatbands that stick to my forehead. This, of course, makes them ideal for windy days. Problem is, I can't remember which hats they are!

I finally bought a Panama for summer wear because I sweat through a couple of my fedoras. That look might work for Indy but not so much for me.

Sincerely,

A high crown helps, and a center dent seems to allow more air space above the scalp than a teardrop, especially if the teardrop covers the top of your head like a skullcap.

Also, for some reason my Akubra Federation Deluxe never shows sweat stains on the ribbon, no matter how much I sweat wearing it. No idea why.
