Suspender buttons

Maybe all my trousers are too small.

Anyone have hints on placement? I've been thinking about adding them to some of my pants, too. I was thinking one right behind the belt loop and then probably 3-4" over. How far down? I believe someone mentioned more than 1/2" or so and the waistband then has a tendency to flop over. Comments? Tips? Hints?

For pleated pants, the ones closest to the fly should be directly in line with the pleat closest to the fly. That will help the pleats hang best when using the braces. Each button in a pair should be 3"-4" apart. In back, 1.5"-2" on either side of the rear center seam. And half and inch down from the top of the waistband seems about right. One tip: when you're sewing the buttons on, if you're putting them inside, it might be best to use thread that matches the color of the fabric and sew all the way through the waistband, rather than just attaching them to the apron/lining inside. I have one pair of trousers where the buttons are just sewn to the apron, and sometimes the button and part of the apron pull up and are visible above the top of the waistband.

I actually think that buttons on the outside look much more casual and less polished than on the inside.

That said, as Orgetorix stated, if you're wearing a waistcoat all the time or a jacket, it's a moot point then. But I think by putting them on the inside it's more adaptable to different situations.

Also, the vast majority of my braces buttons are on the inside and I've never had a problem with comfort either.

Orgetorix has hit the nail on the head.

I personally prefer them on the outside and it was the done thing to have them this way for all British army, RAF, etc uniforms as well.

But do what feels right for you, it's you who has to wear them!

I'm sewing some vintage buttons onto a pair of pants to fix suspenders (US)/braces (UK) onto them.

Advice:

Have them as a feature on the outside?
Or...tucked away on the inside?

As this pair of trousers have the fall front they have a 4 button "fly" as you might expect.
There are 2 buttons each side to accommodate my braces and then also the fall front (flap) has 2 buttons each side to keep that in place.. So all in all there are 12 buttons.. Very unusual, but rather interesting.

I've seen such an arrangement on britches, and is very similar to those on Royal Navy Bell Bottoms. Never seen it on normal trousers before, though

These are how American sailor pants fasten, except there's buttons up the side and across the top, 13 in all.

Also something to think about when sewing them on inside is making sure the thread doesn't show through on the waistband.
