I was watching some old movies that I used to love as a kid, and one of them was from 1981; "Under the Rainbow" starring Chevy Chase, Carrie Fisher, Billy Barty, and Mako. Anybody here remember this film? It has been called many things, mosty crap... even by Fisher... but I think it's no worse than any other b-comedy of the period, and I still love it.

Anyway, with very different eyes, I noticed the 1938 styles, the great hats, the suits... and what I found to be great fashion inside joke, the Italian hitman has the worst hat and sloppiest-fitting suit. lol

I particularly liked Chevy's fedora - very high straight crown, perfect center dent... almost looks like they found an extra Raiders hat and made it look dressy. Anybody know anything about the hat suppliers of this movie.
Finding stills are tough, but here's what little I could find to show the hat;

your yahoo photos

saw your photos on the link and i think you are one of the few that can wear the tall crown and wider brims. The bigger hats look good one you. they would swallow me up! That Dobbs 7.5 looked kind of small especially compared to the adventure built. Sorry no movie info.

Remember the movie, dont remember the hats. I will have to check it out again.

That put's me in the same line with you Gents. Now where's my reruns of Bonanza?

if you were a kid in 1981 I suddenly feel very old....

I hear you Art.

I was teaching a class on preparing resumes.

As I passed mine around to the class I heard some chuckling.

When I asked what was so funny, one of my students said, "Your first job was in 1973, none of us were even born then!"

Thank you, Art. I am very fond of the bigger hats. The Dobbs looks a bit better in person, but it's not one I wear much.

Ze pearl is in ze river?

Yes, a much-panned, thoroughly politically incorrect movie, but full of good one-liners and sight-gags.

Nice hats, but to me Chevy Chase looks like he's wearing his grandfather's clothes -- just doesn't look a bit natural on him.

Goodbye, Strudel.

I like the look of that hat.

Personally, nothing bothers me more than when someone makes a vintage-styled movie and supplies the actors with tapered, pre-shaped Dorfman Pacifics.

One key to movie-making; no matter how ridiculous it may seem, always be as historically accurate as possible when designing costumes.
People will notice.

That's it! (Possibly...)

Well, I'll be goll-swizzled. Maybe THAT's what I need. Seeing the second photo of Chevy in the hat makes me think that I need that high, straight crown! Looks great on him... but then, in that film, he's not a middle-aged fat man... as am I. ;) I just received my first straw Panama fedora the other day, and it's got a nice wide brim, but it lacks... something, as does my "Vienna" hat from Miller Hats. Nice lids, but I am actually thinking I should be looking for the higher crown, maybe a slightly narrower brim.

Thanks for posting that! Always something new.
