Surplus army khakis for casual wear

I'm curious if anyone has had success with surplus army pants in cotton that could pass for casual wear. I'm thinking along the lines of European vintage 1950s-60s, maybe German moleskin or Swiss or Australian stuff? I'd prefer that there be minimal to none cargo pockets--not looking for a combat style trouser but something that one could incorporate into an outdoorsy / workwear / safari style outfit. Ideal colors would range from brown to tan to khaki. A subtle olive perhaps but nothing too militaristic.

Or, perhaps good reproductions might fit the bill as well.

Suggestions?

Recently fell in with a pair in an army surplus shop in Camden market, here in London, that are purportedly French, 1950s. Excellent stuff. Not very far off the cut of WW2 USAAF Officer's Pinks, but in a tan drill cotton.
