I think the phrase, "Truth, Justice, and the American Way" was mangled not because it predates the 1950's anti-Communist chest thumping but because of the $$'s.
Singer & Co. are thinking about that juicy foreign dvd market. ;)
To some folk, that is the American Way. [huh]

How times have changed.

In the '50s Superman TV series, the phrase "the American way" was received positively.

In the late '70s Superman movie, the phrase "the American way" was received as kitsch. I remember hearing the audience laugh when Christopher Reeves said it.

Today, it doesn't appear at all ... because half of the U.S. thinks it's positive, and the other half (and most of the world) thinks it's worse than kitsch.

I agree. It gives a certain meaning to the phrase "period piece" doesn't it? Film generally reflects the time it was made rather than the time frame it seeks to present. Modern morals always intrude when viewing and discussing the past. We frequently point out the modern haircuts or clothes in movies that seek to present the 40s, 50s, etc.

If Superman did not say "The American Way" because it was not a popular sentiment 1930s imagine what he would have said about Germans or Asians back then!

MY REVIEW

Well like said before Superman was sent to Earth not the United States. And granted I believe in the same things that Superman does (said or not) "Truth, Justice, and The American Way" but in this day and age it just can't be said anymore. To some countries "The American Way" is to go into a country and start a war for oil. It stinks but it's true. But when it comes down to it Superman is the ulitmate Illigal Alien.

Now onto the Movie Review-

I'll state off the bat to get it out of the way. Christopher Reeve is the ONLY flesh and blood Superman I've EVER seen in my entire life. He is Superman.

Brandon Routh does the best he can. I think he's still working on it, and I have faith in him, having met him and been able to talk to him. Now in his defense, the majority of us see Reeve as Superman. But 8 year old kid you sat next to in the theater that will have a forum just like this one 30 years from now about clothes from the 80's will think Brandon Routh is the only Superman.

Having grown up watching the orginal Superman movies it made me really upset that Singer made the child Supermans'. In Superman II Lois and Superman have "relations" in the Fortress of Solitude and quote unquote create a child. :rage: But according to that movie when that happened Superman gave up his powers to "be" with Lois. So the kid should have no superpowers.:rage: And I won't even get into the fact Superman's offspring killed someone in cold blood. Even if Lois's life was in danger Superman doesn't kill and neither should his children. It just goes against what he stands for. Singer keep this story line going we're all in trouble... what's next Nuclear Man Jr.

Speaking of Lois... this Lois lacked the "spunk" that Margo Kidder or even Teri Hatcher had.

I love every scene Jimmy Olson was in. His character was awesome. He made me laugh everytime I saw him.

Brandon Routh will be divided into two sections... Clark Kent and Superman.

Clark Kent- I thought he... the "majority" of the time got the Christopher Reeve Clark Kent feel. Granted Chris Reeve played Clark to a tee. But you have to give Brandon credit where it's due. He had HUGE shoes to fill... the scene after the "Superman/Lois" flight where he has food hanging out of his mouth is classic. Another one of my favorite lines is when everyone is talking about how Lex got out of prison and Jimmy says to Clark... something to the effect of "How pissed do you think Superman was?" and the Clark saying what he did. He was good but not as great as Christopher Reeve.

Superman- Here is my thing with this Superman... he's too weak when it come to matters of the heart. Think about all the people that died or where injured while he was hanging outside Lois's house listening and watching what she was doing... not something Superman would do. BUT at the same time not Brandon Rouths' fault... it's the writers. Everytime I saw Brandon I saw Superman.

Lex Luthor- Kevin Spacey nailed the look of Lex. It was everything I've seen in comics since I was young... he looked just like Lex. BUT what we where missing was the bravado. In Christoper Reeve's Superman we get...

"This is Lex Luthor... Only one thing alive on less than four legs can hear this frequency Superman, and that's you. In approximately five minutes a poison gas pellet containing propane lithium compound will be released through thousands of air ducts in the city, effectively annihilating half the population of Metropolis"

In this one it was stuff like...
LEX: "Come on say it... its right on the tip of your tounge...
LOIS: "You'll never get away with it"
LEX: No... the other thing.
LOIS: Superman will stop...
LEX: WRONGGGG!

I half expected the writers to write nah nah a boo boo in the script.

When it really comes down to it I blame the majority of this on the writers and the people who gave the script the green light.

And incase no one knew we can all look forward to seeing Ben Affleck play George Reeves in "Hollywoodland" which should be coming out soon.

Sorry I'm geeking out in this picture but I was taking it with Superman.

Yes it is a ballcap...:eusa_doh: but when someone from Warner Brothers gives it to you... you wear it.

We had shown up for an advanced screening WAY early. And Warner Bros. promotional department was there setting up tents and autograph lines and such so instead of standing around waiting to get in I asked if they needed any help. Well they did. All I did was pretty much walk around in a "Staff" badge and tell people where to hang posters and stuff. Basically instructed the theater employees. Then the head of the promotional dept. came over to me and asked if I happened to have the Superman Score as the guy who was suppost to bring it did not. So I took a trip home (about 5 mins. away) picked it up and found myself walking around with not only a "Staff" badge but a "VIP" badge on top of it. That's how I was able to chat and hangout a bit with Brandon and his family (Mom, Dad, and Brother).

Don't they do another everything?

Yes. They don't make movies. They make franchises. They won't stop until money is lost.

And regardless of how bad this one was -- or how bad every one after is going to be -- darn it, I can't wait for the next one.
