From what I heard from Superman fan-boy friends is that this movie is supposed to follow where the Reeves movies left off, not an entirely new deal. They are trying to somewhat replicate the "look" of the characters and costumes so they go together. That's also the reason for Brando being in it. As for the Smallville shots, they are not telling the origin all over again, just filling in some spots in the past for the story. And he is "Returning" from being in space for a number of years since the last movie. The Supes costume changes are apparently upgrades he has made. At least that's what I have heard.

Not "the last movie", Superman II. They're pretending that III and IV never happened.

I still wanna know why, if years have supposedly passed, this Routh guy is obviously younger than Reeve was in I and II (he's even younger than Smallville's Tom Welling... WTF?!?)

I remain worried about this film...

Know what? For me every TV and movie Superman saga and series have played well. Each group of actors and directors have brought something to the table that made their rendition their own. They've all been in good taste and serious intent with no glib, tongue-in-cheek crap like "hey yo, look, I'm SUPERman. Hahaha! I would agree that the script does not need to take us to Smallville again since if anybody doesn't know the story of young Clark Kent they must have been raised a fallout shelter.

It's simply a matter of immersing one's self in the cimematic experience without overthinking it. Anyone that goes to the show with other Supermen and endless comparisons trucking through their minds is going to have a negative end result. Switch your brain off and allow yourself to be entertained like you were watching the story for the 1st time.

It's set in modern times?
The first trailer somehow gave me the impression they were sticking to the proper time period.

I think it looks a special kind of rankly awful.

The newest trailer gives me a bit of hope; I think Kevin Spacey will do a very nice Luthor and I'm willing to give the new kid a chance. I wish ALL movies would back away from the CGI, though. It's kind of like watching a Doug Henning magic act when Houdini's brand of magic was actually much more "magical."

Bottom line, even if it sucks I still have access to my Christoper Reeve version on DVD. We should just be thankful that the Tim Burton/Nicholas Cage version went up in flames.

Lex Luthor, Smallville, the Fortress of Solitude. I'm having deja vu all over again. Guess there's no new ideas coming from Krypton anytime soon.

I always found superman a little boring when I was a kid I don't think being an adult will change that. His costume was just too goofy, the big red S and the cape... it looked like it was something doodled into creation by kids to amuse other, younger kids....

Hey, waita minute... he was!

Well said, Twitch, very well said. You bring up valid points that I hadn't considered. It's an odd era in which we live, what with so many older films being redone. Sometimes I resent anyone trying to remake a "classic" that should be left untouched for a multitude of reasons. But, those reasons would be personal and certainly biased for each of us.

I admire your attitude. :eusa_clap

Just the opinion of a big kid

I'm looking forward to seeing this movie. Superman's always been my favourite superhero. I know computer graphics and SPFX aren't for everyone, but I want to see Superman fly like lightning and repel bullets and all that jive. It's just fun!

Some guys I know are Star Wars fans, they got all upset with Ep I, then II was good until III came along, now they think all the movies stink. Too much CGI, they say. Don't like the story line, etc. Well, when I go, I want to see those spaceships zoom around and the laser guns explode and weirdo-looking aliens cruising across the set. And it's George Lucas' story, not theirs.
I'm just there to enjoy the ride.

I just saw the new Superman trailer during the previews of Poseidon, it looks amazing. I was excited to see it before, but now even more. Kevin Spacey is an excellent choice for Luthor. They're using the same John Williams music, which couldn't be more perfect.
